It was not until 1889 that the former officer of the Tsarist Army began with his artistic training. In 1896 he moved to Munich to attend a private art school there. In Munich he met Wassily Kandinsky. In Murnau, Jawlensky worked with Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter for the first time. The idea for the foundation of the "New Artists Association in Munich" came up at that time. Jawlensky also belonged to the movement of the blue rider. He later founded the group "The Blue Four" with Klee, Kandinsky and Feininger.
