Around 230 exhibitions have been handed down during Picasso's lifetime , which were of such outstanding importance that they found their way into historical records. These exhibitions became more important over time, until 1973 Picasso was twice at the Biennale in Venice (1950 Biennale 25, 1960 Biennale 30) and three times on the Documenta in Kassel (1955 Documenta 1, 1959 Documenta 2, 1964 Documenta 3), but only after his death does his work really start to develop its effect:
The few exhibitions during his lifetime are contrasted to over 2,300 important post-mortem exhibitions, in all the old and all the newly established centers of contemporary art, across the world.
The Biennals still like to decorate themselves with Picasso, in 1976 he was represented on the 37th, 1978 on the 38th and 1995 on the 46th Biennale in Venice, in 2005 Picasso China conquered that his work is present at the 2nd Biennale in Beijing. The Documentas also like him, in 1977 Picasso can be seen on Documenta 6 and 1987 on Documenta 8.
The current exhibition figures are available on the Internet, and the numbers change (now, here, today, today, in 2023, with a 50 -year artist); Not looking in a few days, and the number of Picasso exhibitions recorded has risen from 2536 to 2564-one can hardly show that the myth of Picasso lives on!
When and where do 2023 Picasso exhibitions take place?
devoted to numerous special exhibitions around the world in the Picasso year 2023-on the occasion of the 50th return of his day of death
Spain in particular will honor Picasso's work and legacy with multifaceted exhibitions in Málaga, Madrid, Barcelona, A Coruña and Bilbao. The famous painter and sculptor and icon of the Iberian Peninsula has demonstrated incredible creativity throughout his life and left over 50,000 works of art for posterity, including paintings, graphics, collages, sculptures and ceramics.
He was also active as a stage designer and poet. His most famous work, “Guernica ,” an anti-war painting, remains relevant and well-known today, as does “Les demoiselles d'Avignon,” which refers to the seedy Calle de Avinyó in Barcelona.
His admiration for the world of actors and performers was reflected in his melancholic blue and rose periods . His countless portraits of his many muses, lovers, and models revolutionized the art world.
To celebrate the anniversary, 16 exhibitions will take place in five Spanish cities closely associated with Picasso's life. The Wuppertal Heydt Museum and the Sprengel Museum Hannover have now worked together to enable this for the first time.

Málaga - Picassos birth city
Málaga was the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the son of a freelance painter named Ruiz. Picasso himself wasn't particularly fond of his father's art, which consisted of subjects like partridges, doves, rabbits, and flowers. However, it was in Málaga that he created his first oil painting, titled "El picador," when he was just nine years old. His later dove of peace became one of his most famous works.

Pablo Picasso lived in A Coruña for five years during his childhood after his father had accepted a job as an art teacher at the "Instituto da Guarda". From 1894, Picasso began to lead diaries under the names La Coruña and Azul y Blanco ("blue and white") and to illustrate them with portraits and caricatures.
This period was a pivotal moment in the artist's development, as he began his art studies and lost his sister – an event that would forever shape his life. To honor Picasso's time in the city, the Museum of Fine Arts in A Coruña presents the exhibition "White Picasso in Blue Memory ," comprised of approximately one hundred works, which explores the painter's connection to Galicia.
The city administration of A Coruña is also planning to renovate the first floor of the Picasso Museum House in the Calle Payo Gómez 14, the artist's house during his time in A Coruña. In 2002 it was opened to make the artist's connection to the city better known.

The 14-year-old passed the entrance exam in just one day, clearly demonstrating his artistic talent. His father subsequently set up a private studio for him.
Barcelona was a key location for Picasso's artistic career; Not only did he get a solid academic training there, but there were also many artistic inspirations that led him on the way to modernity. He also made numerous friendships that remained connected to Barcelona for a lifetime.
After a brief stay in Madrid, Picasso returned to Catalonia in 1898 and was allowed to exhibit "Els Quatre Gats.""Le Chat Noir ," was a hub of the modern art world. Following the death of his close friend Carles Casagemas in 1901, Picasso began his melancholic Blue Period , which he spent in his studio at Riera de Sant Joan 17. The ground floor of this building housed "Els Quatre Gats," located in the Casa Martí—a building designed by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch on Carrer Montsió in the center of Barcelona.

His dissatisfaction with the teaching methods led him to leave school after a short stay and started his career as an independent artist.
He used the time to attend various artists, explore museums and strengthen his self -confidence by his signature from »Ruiz« to »P. Picasso «changed. Nowadays, Madrid is known for his lively cultural scene, which offers a unique variety due to the art triangle with its numerous museums such as the Prado, Reina Sofía and the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum.

Fernand tells: Picasso and his friends (until February 19, 2023)
Fernande Olivier (1881-1966) started her career as a professional model for many artists as a advanced woman and became known worldwide as a partner of the young Picasso. It encouraged his artistic development from the blue period to cubism. As a writer, she describes life in Montmartre at the beginning of the 20th century, including Picasso and his Catalan friendship as well as the bohemian of the Bateau-Lavoir.
An exhibition is devoted to her life for the first time and illustrates some of the most important events of the avant -garde based on their writings. She illuminates her role as a woman, artist and model and gives interesting insights into difficult emancipation at the beginning of the 20th century.
This exhibition joins the exhibition Poussin et l'amour in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, which ends on March 5, 2023. The role of Poussin is examined in the development of Picasso's sensual and erotic eyesight . His bacchanalia from 1944 offer a starting point for an examination of Picasso's view of the work of Poussin.
From the 1930s to the 1960s, Picasso dealt intensively with the rituals and relationships of Dionysus. It is also offered to set Picasso's Bacchanalia, which he produced during the German occupation, in relation to the photographs and reports that Picasso made known at the time of the liberation.
The Musée de l'Homme has been presenting the "Art and History" season since October 2022, including the Picasso exhibition and the history. This shows the influence that the prehistoric art has on the artist's work, which was moved in the discovery of cave paintings, rock engravings, megalithic systems and paleolithic venus figures at the beginning of the 20th century.
A total of 40 paintings, sculptures, drawings, ceramics and pebbles engraved by Picasso are exhibited and shown in dialogue with original exposure and reproductions from the past.

Picasso 1969–1972, the end of the beginning (8/84 - 25.6.2023)
→ Antibes Musée Picasso
Of the 23 volumes of Christian Zervos's Picasso catalog, 13 focus on the past 20 years, which shows how productively the artist's last two decades have been. Picasso's creativity was particularly intense after 1968, between 1969 and 1972. At the age of 90, painting for Picasso was primarily an act of desire.
The courage to live in his very last paintings in lively colors and mostly in large formats, Picasso's extraordinary creative power testifies in later life. They also tell of his often overlooked talent as a color expert. His skills as a color master were to be admired at an exhibition in Avignon in 1970 and 1973.
Picasso returned to familiar figures and topics in old age. With youthful energy, he produced pictures that make the impression that he was inviting painting, "which was stronger than he and with him what she wanted" on new adventures. The end of the beginning.
Goya in the eye of Picasso (30.6.–1.10.2023)
→ Castes Musée Goya
The exhibition “Goya in the Eyes of Picasso” explores the connections between the works of these two Spanish artistic titans and, above all, the influence Goya had on Picasso's art. Picasso constantly engaged with the themes that were particularly important to Goya, from bullfighting to his political works in which he denounced the injustices of the world.
A selection of drawings, printing, lithographs and photographs examines the connection between the two artists and shows the expertise and strength of their works.
Picasso in the Lambert Collection, 50 years later in Avignon (13.7.–15.10.2023)
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Picasso's death and the 1973 Papal Palace exhibition, the Lambert collection shows a dozen of his works from his last creative period. The works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Miquel Barceló, Julian Schnabel, Nan Goldin and Andres Serrano are also shown and form a dialogue with Picasso's works.
Basquiat , Barceló and Schnabel have dealt with the last creative period of Picasso. They emphasize how his way of painting and his attitude to painting in the 1980s had a clear influence. Goldin and Serrano also work with the last flare -off of Picasso's work.
À toi de faire ma mignonne. Sophie Calle au Musée Picasso (1.8.2023–28.1.2024)
→ Paris Musée National Picasso
Since the 1970s, numerous exhibitions around the world have been devoted to the work of Sophie Calle. She was a concept artist, photographer and video artist, who sometimes saw herself as a detective and linked unique text and video together. Your works of art form a huge network of internal connections and references, together as the chapters of a book.
It successfully overlaps the difference between public and intimacy, fiction and reality, artificiality and life. Sophie Calle meticulously orchestrates an undergrade reality - hers or that of others - and at the same time offers space for coincidences.
Gertrude Stein and Picasso. The invention of the language (13.9.2023–21.2.2024)
This exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg offers an insight into Gertrude Stein's life. It illustrates her friendship with Picasso and her connections to the Parisian art scene, especially during the years of "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" and Cubism, with a wealth of Picasso artworks and archival material.
The presentation is rounded off by works by Warhol , Bruce Nauman , Roni Horn and Glenn Ligon, which emphasize the various effects of their dialogue. The exhibition is structured by Cécile Debray, President of the National Museum Picasso Paris, into four main areas: places, objects, portraits and words.

In the new salons of the Grands apartments, studies and works by Picasso meet the historical decor of the Palais de Monaco at the exhibition “Modernity and Classicism”.
The Paris of the Modern 1905–1925 (17.10.2023–28.4.2024)
In the early years of the twentieth century, Paris attracted many artists from around the world and was considered a center of cultural influence. The scandal surrounding the "Fauvists" at the Salon d'Automne in 1905 and the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925 marked the beginning of an era of modernism.
This time is tangible and visible based on fashion, film, photography, painting, sculptures, drawings, dance, design, architecture and industry that stand for this modernity. Pablo Picasso played a central role.
The 2023 Picasso drawings is the most comprehensive flashback to its drawings and prints, which has ever been issued. The artist had a constantly growing preference for the power of the line, which ranged from snake -shaped lines to shades and compositions. In addition, visitors can admire the pastel tones and the intensive black of the ink.
The exhibition is based on the Picasso-Paris National Museum and was inspired by the artist's notebooks. It interrupts the systematic chronology and enables a comparison between masterpieces and for the first time.

Not all of these are, by no means all, many places and other collections of mentioned cities are missing in the countries mentioned, where a Picasso can be admired publicly. In addition to the holiday destinations mentioned, there are 11 other countries that show Picasso's works of art in public collections.
What is striking is that around 40 among these countries have a form of government with clearly democratic features, i.e. over 90 percent. Of the total of a total of 190 states in the world (result of a wide range of political science democratic negotiations), only around 50 percent are classified as democracies.
Apart from every highly complicated theoretical-scientific consideration, with a view to these figures: art and democracy have something to do with each other, at least in no way affect each other negative.
Generally present: Picasso's art in our world
How present Picasso is in our world quickly becomes clear when you take a look at the prices that are paid for his art today. Because this is about hardly imaginable sums, many paintings of Picasso play the main roles in record lists of art:
's "Boy with a Pipe" from 1905 fetched $104.2 million at Sotheby's , making it the most expensive painting in the world at that time. Its price has since dropped slightly, but other Picasso works have taken its place. Picasso appears several times on the list of the world's most expensive paintings as of January 2015.
The 1932 painting “Nude with Green Leaves and Breasts” currently the sixth most expensive painting in the world, having at Christie’s. “Dora Maar with Cat” from 1941 is currently the eighth most expensive painting in the world, having fetched $95.2 million at Sotheby’s in 2006.
Then the descendants of other painters were able to look forward to some places in the ranking, from No. 30 Picasso has everything under control again:
The “Woman with Folded Arms” from 1902 was sold for $55.0 million at Christie's in 2000, No. 32.
No. 35 is the “Portrait of Angel Fernández de Soto” from 1903, auctioned for $51.8 million at Christie's London in 2010.
No. 36 is “Pierrette’s Wedding” from 1905, $51.6 million, 1989, Binoche et Godeau
No. 37: “Seated Woman in the Garden” from 1938, $49.5 million, 1999
No. 39: “Yo, Picasso” from 1901, $47.9 million, 1989
No. 41: “Femme assise pres d'une fenetre” from 1932, $44.8 million, 2013
No. 51: “Nature morte aux tulipes” from 1932, $41.5 million, 2012
No. 53: “Au Lapin Agile” from 1905, $40.7 million, 1989
No. 54: “La Lecture” from 1932, $40.7 million, 2011
No. 61: “Acrobat and Young Harlequin” from 1905, $38.4 million, 1988
Picasso with 13 paintings is on the list of 70 most expensive pictures in the world, with a total sales of almost $ 768 million - that's not a cardboard stick, for 13 pictures.
Both the sales figures, from 1988 to 2013, and the dates of the paintings, from 1902 to 1941, demonstrate the enduring popularity of Picasso's works, from his earliest pieces to those of his sixty years. Only his very late works have yet to be fully discovered by high finance, but even these "bargains" are beyond the reach of the average person…
Against this backdrop, one could justifiably question the naivety of the electrician who, in 2010, “found 271 works by Picasso” and claimed, astonished, to have known nothing of their value of around 60 million euros (you can read this amusing story in the SPIEGEL ONLINE article: Sensational find in France:271 unknown Picasso paintings discovered).
Picasso for “normal” people
The list just set up speaks of 13 Picassos, $ 768 million, 9 of which disappeared from their private owners and were never seen again. Of the remaining four Picassos, one was bought by a Japanese investment banker, according to the bankruptcy of which three years later disappeared into the safe of the bank who lending the purchase money and has not reappeared since then.
The next one was bought by a shipowner whose home country charged its shipowners almost no taxes for 45 years, but now has to be supported by all taxpaying citizens of the EU; we have all essentially paid for a piece of this Picasso in the “10th most important private collection worldwide”.
The third disappeared into the inaccessible rooms of a Japanese department store chain, a single 13 Picassos was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by its rich owner after three years of private art enjoyment and thus made accessible to all people again.
12:1, a poor ratio for the average citizen; if “high art” continues to disappear into private collections at the same rate, our children will probably only be able to see a few outstanding works of art…
Before that happens, you should have seen a Picasso in the museum; Here are a few more tips on inexpensive Picasso enjoyment: There are few artists whose works in more posters, calendars, prints, postcards, etc. have been marketed, and you can still buy these items today (preferably with a small, comprehensible-paying trading company, whose owner hardly buys the last picasos from the image area).
Picasso can feel, read, see and play in many other species:

Sir John Richardson , British art historian and art critic and probably the most important Picasso biographer was friends with Picasso since around 1948 . Richardson has presented a four-part Picasso biography, the last volume of which has not yet been published: A Life of Picasso, Vol. 1: The Early Years, 1881-1906 , Vol. 2: The Painter of Modern Life, 1907-1917 , Vol. III: The Triumphant Years 1917-1932 .
In the Paperback version: A Life of Picasso: The Cubist Rebel, 1907-1916 , The Prodigy, 1881-1906 , The Triumphant Years, 1917-1932 . These volumes were released in 1991, 1996 and 2007 and each created one to two decades of Picassos.
This biography has its own exciting story, Richardson is said to have paid more for the image rights than he took from the sale of the first three volumes. Nevertheless, the fourth volume should appear, a challenging task for the author born in 1924: Volume IV is said to describe Picasso's life from 1933 until his death in 1973, Richardson has to describe four decades and started this work at the age of 83.
The final volume was intended to contain some surprises about Picasso that no one had published before. This volume was originally slated for release in 2014. In November 2014, Richardson received hundreds of unpublished photographs and even videos of the “private Picasso” , to include in this biography.
Unfortunately, Richardson died in New York City on March 12, 2019 before he was able to publish this hotly expected fourth volume.
Biography by Jaume Sabartés I Gual
Jaume Sabartés I Gual Picasso was just as close or closer
The Spanish sculptor, writer, and poet was a lifelong friend and long-time private secretary of Picasso. Jaime Sabartés is the author of, for example, “Picasso. Conversations and Reminiscences. With 17 Portraits and Drawings by Picasso,” published in 1956 by Arche Verlag Zurich, and the biography “Picasso: Toreros ,” published by André Sauret, Monte-Carlo, in 1961.

Films about Picasso's life
A few Picasso films away from the usual documentation that Picasso live under this and that and still a completely different aspect:
“Le Mystère Picasso” (1956), directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot (“The Wages of Fear”). This film about the “Picasso miracle” illuminates the working methods of this multifaceted and fascinating artist in a way that is both impressive and entertaining. In this documentary, you can watch Picasso live at work , often creating artworks that can only be seen in this film.
“F is for Forgery” (Vérités et mensonges, 1976) deals with Picasso from an unusual perspective: that of the art forger Elmyr de Hory, who in the middle of the last century forged countless masterpieces (including some by Picasso) and sold them to well-known museums, without them ever suspecting that they had fallen for a forgery.
The direction of this oblique masterpiece leads to the wonderful Orson Welles , the script wrote Orson Welles together with Oja Kodar (who is said to have had an affair with Picasso), the actors are Orson Welles (as he himself), Oja Kodar (girl), Joseph Cotten, François Reichenbach, Richard Wilson, Paul Stewart, Sasa Devcic, Gary Graver, Andrés Vicente Gomez, Julio Palinkas, Christian Odasso, Françoise Widhoff, Peter Bogdanovich, William Alland, Elmyr de Hory, Laurence Harvey and Clifford Irving. Started in Germany on January 30, 1976, the DVD has been around since April 7, 2006, Cocoduction France, Germany, Iran.
“Picassos Äventyr” (The Adventures of Mr. Picasso, 1978), directed by Tage Danielsson , is a Swedish comedy that ironically summarizes the painter's life. A quirky and humorous film, truly polyglot with (mostly internationally understandable) terms from ten languages, it deserves attention.
There were not all books and films that deal with Picasso - research does not take long to find a look at Picasso and his relationship with any topic of this world.
You can enter anything into the search engine, from “Picasso+nude” (or abyss, alchemy, wisdom of age, Avignon…) to “Picasso+number” (or drawing, cymbal, shaggy hair, sugar loaf…), you will always find a publication on the topic.
The “On-line Picasso Project”
Once you have read all of this, you can learn more about the artist on the “Online Picasso Project .” This was launched in 1997 as an academic publication supported by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX, USA.
