The largest color surface in the room: What a tablecloth does for the dining room

People spend a lot of time thinking about wall colors, but rarely about textiles on the table. A square meter of fabric on the tabletop changes the perception of a room more reliably than a new picture on the wall. But this surface is usually covered haphazardly.

Why the tabletop counts differently than the wall

One wall stands vertically, is obscured by furniture, and lies at the edge of the field of vision. The table surface is freestanding, horizontal, and in the middle of the room. It also does something that no wall can: it reflects light from above back upwards, into the faces of the guests.

A dark ceiling does the opposite. It absorbs the light, making the room feel calmer and more intimate, but the lighting harsher. Color: three effects that can be planned

• Light colors like white, cream, or champagne visually expand a room and give tableware a clean silhouette. Champagne is the more harmonious color because, unlike pure white, it doesn't appear garish under warm artificial light.
