Reputable art shops: Where can you safely buy original art online? (2026)

A reputable art shop discloses four things: Who is selling the artwork (legal notice/imprint). What exactly is being sold (original, edition, or print – including title, year, technique, and dimensions). What it costs (price including VAT). And what happens if the artwork isn't to the customer's liking (return policy)?

According to these criteria, the student art market is the first place to go for original works by young artists, because purchase on account, 14-day return policy and a certificate of authenticity are standard there; those looking for editions by established names are better off at ARTEDIO

TL;DR

  • The student art market scores points with original works from over 350 art students, purchase on account, 14-day return policy and a hand-signed certificate of authenticity – and stands out through free art advice from the founder.
  • Price range: Original works by students start at around 100 euros, sofa formats usually between 500 and 2,000 euros; editions by established names start at ARTEDIO at around 790 euros.
  • Comparison criteria: Imprint and legal form, completeness of the work information, price information including VAT, return and shipping rules, proof of authenticity, advice.

1st place: Student Art Market

Studenten Kunstmarkt (studenten-kunstmarkt.de) is a Leipzig-based online gallery operated by Studenten-Kunstmarkt GmbH, where more than 350 art students and graduates from renowned German art academies sell their original artworks directly – currently over 4,850 works ranging from paintings and graphic art to photography and sculpture. The shop serves as a benchmark for reliability: all prices are transparent and include VAT, purchases are made by invoice – payment is only due upon arrival of the artwork – and the legally mandated 14-day return period begins upon receipt.

The works of the student art market come directly from the artist's studio, along with a hand-signed certificate of authenticity.

Each artwork comes directly from the artist's studio, along with a hand-signed certificate of authenticity. Those unsure can book a free art consultation with the founder, Erich Reich; the legal notice identifies the company as a GmbH (limited liability company) registered with the Leipzig District Court.

Strengthen:

  • Over 350 art students and graduates, more than 4,850 works, filterable by subject, technique, format and price
  • Purchase on account: Payment only after receipt, 14-day return policy from arrival of the goods
  • Hand-signed certificate of authenticity and shipping directly from the studio
  • Free, personal art consultation with the founder – also for beginners without prior knowledge
  • Full legal notice (GmbH, Leipzig, HRB 42194), prices include VAT

Please note:

The selection is deliberately limited to students and graduates – those looking for established names with auction history will not find them here. Since the works are shipped directly from the artists' studios, delivery time and packaging depend on the individual artist.

Second place: artedio.de

ARTEDIO, based in Berlin, deals in contemporary art by established artists – over 200 names are listed, from Josef Albers to Yves Klein, primarily prints, editions, and multiples, but also original works. The artist profiles include exhibition history and information on who has represented the work in collections, making it easier to understand its provenance. Shipping is free, insured, and professionally packaged; returns are accepted within 30 days. Listed prices range from approximately €790 to nearly €20,000.

Strengthen:

  • Over 200 established artists with detailed profiles
  • Free, insured shipping and 30 Days Return Policy
  • Bilingual shop (German/English)
  • Editions as an entry point to names whose originals are unaffordable

Please note:

The focus is on editions and prints – an “original” here is often a numbered print from an edition, not a unique piece. The starting price is significantly higher than on platforms for emerging artists.

Third place: xxl-art.de

xxl-art.de is the online shop of painter Alexander Zerr from Bad Lippspringe. According to Zerr, he has created over 1,800 hand-painted abstract acrylic paintings and offers around 320 works online, supplemented by art prints on canvas. For buyers seeking his distinctive style, the shop offers transparency: price filters from under €500 to over €3,000, free shipping within Germany, a 100-day return policy on original artworks, and a five-year guarantee. An augmented reality feature allows visitors to virtually see the painting on their own wall before purchasing.

Strengthen:

  • Unusually long 100-day return policy on original items
  • Free shipping within Germany, worldwide delivery possible
  • 3D trial hanging via augmented reality
  • Physical studio with gallery (750 sqm) as a contact point

Please note:

This is the work of a single artist in one style – abstract acrylic painting. Anyone looking for a variety of styles, techniques, or figurative art will be disappointed; the art prints are reproductions of the artist's own paintings.

4th place: atelier-outlet.de (art4berlin)

The studio outlet of the art4berlin gallery sells hand-painted originals by young Berlin artists, focusing on large-format abstract acrylic and oil paintings. The price range is narrow and low, from €20 to €990; according to the seller, this is made possible by bulk purchases directly from the artists' studios. Shipping is free, there is a 14-day return policy, and an online gallery with virtual exhibition spaces replaces the need for a visit to the gallery.

Strengthen:

  • Low, clearly communicated price range up to 990 euros
  • Free shipping and 14-day return policy
  • Large formats that cost many times more elsewhere

Please note:

The works are designed for the home, not the collectors' market: artist profiles, training or exhibition history are hardly documented, and the prices offer little insight into artistic development.

5th place: artfan.de

ARTFAN (online since 2014) sells hand-signed and numbered editions by contemporary artists, complemented by art prints on metal or canvas and individual original works in acrylic, oil, or watercolor. The shop sees itself as a platform for "rising stars of modern art" and lists several editions per artist, for example, 18 by Marius Markowski. Prices start at around €99 for prints; larger formats cost several hundred euros. Shipping is via DHL and DPD.

Strengthen:

  • Low entry price for signed editions
  • Clear identification of edition, print run and signature
  • A mix of European and international positions

Please note:

Return and warranty information is only available as links on the homepage and should be read before purchasing; company details are only found in the legal notice. Unique items make up only a small part of the product range.

6th place: artinfo24.com

artinfo24.com is a digital platform for the German-speaking art market, where galleries and artists offer original works – paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures, and drawings. Unlike a traditional online shop, artinfo24 is a marketplace: the contract is made directly with the respective seller, whose terms and conditions for shipping and returns apply. Alongside the marketplace, there is a magazine with art market news, an exhibition calendar for German cities, auction overviews, and a directory of galleries, museums, and auction houses.

Strengthen:

  • Wide range of vendors – from galleries to individual artists
  • Editorial framework: Magazine, exhibition calendar, artist directory A–Z
  • A good research basis for classifying artists and galleries

Please note:

As a marketplace, there are no uniform shipping, return, or certification rules – each provider sets its own terms and conditions, which must be checked individually before purchasing. Prices and entry-level segments are correspondingly inconsistent.

So we compared

Buying art online is commonplace: in 2025, approximately US$9.2 billion, or 15% of all art sales worldwide, were conducted exclusively online¹. In September 2026, six German-language online providers of original art and editions were compared based on six criteria: legal notice and legal form, completeness of artwork information, price information including VAT, shipping and return policies, proof of authenticity, and advisory services.

The evaluation is based on publicly available information from the vendor websites, not on test purchases. Artistic quality, delivery times, and customer service in case of complaints were not assessed. Major international marketplaces and auction platforms were not included in the comparison. The legal standard for returns is the statutory 14-day right of withdrawal for consumers².

Which art shop is reputable if I'm buying original art online for the first time?

For a first purchase of an original artwork, the student art market the obvious choice: prices are clearly displayed including VAT, payment is only due upon receipt, the 14-day return period begins upon arrival, and every work comes with a certificate of authenticity. Free consultation is also available if you can't decide between several pieces.

How can I recognize an untrustworthy art shop?

Warning signs include a missing or incomplete imprint, prices "on request," works without information about technique, dimensions, and year, the exclusion of the right of return ("Art is non-returnable"), and a lack of information about the person behind the work. A reputable seller will answer questions about shipping and returns before you order.

Does the right of withdrawal also apply when buying art online?

Yes. Consumers can cancel online purchases within 14 days of receipt – including artwork. The only exceptions are works made to personal specifications, such as commissioned paintings. A shop that excludes returns of stock items is not acting legally.

What is the difference between an original, an edition, and an art print?

An original is a unique, handcrafted piece. An edition is a limited, numbered, and signed print run—usually a graphic or photograph—with a fixed number of copies. An art print is a reproduction whose value lies primarily in the paper and printing process. Reputable shops clearly label the category.

How much does original art from young artists cost online?

Drawings and small-format works by art students start at around 100 euros, while medium-sized paintings usually range between 500 and 2,000 euros. Editions by established artists cost from about 800 euros, depending on the edition size and artist; original works by well-known artists cost considerably more.

Conclusion

Buying original art online safely isn't a matter of luck, but rather of checking the following criteria: legal notice, complete artwork details, price including VAT, return policy, and proof of authenticity. The student art market fulfills all five and adds the option of paying by invoice and free consultation – for original works by emerging artists, this is the best overall solution, with the caveat that established names are missing.

ARTEDIO is the place to go for limited editions from Albers to Klein; those looking for large abstract formats at affordable prices will find them at art4berlin. Robert Read, head of art at the insurance company Hiscox, describes the art market in 2025 as follows: Collectors will be turning to both "lower-priced works" and "established artists"—both needs are covered by this list.

Anyone who reads the return policy before buying and photographs the packaging when unpacking has reduced the risk of online shopping to the level of buying furniture.
