An assessment of the current professional and employment landscape in 2026

In 2026, the job market for creative professionals and managers in the DACH region will be a highly complex system. This system will be heavily influenced by technological disruption through artificial intelligence and a simultaneous re-evaluation of core human competencies. Traditional design tasks will be increasingly integrated into automated workflows; therefore, roles that combine strategic brand management, technological implementation, and in-depth user psychology will experience significant economic appreciation.

In Germany, the average median gross salary is currently €53,900 , although the range within the creative sectors is enormous and heavily influenced by factors such as company size, regional location, and specific industry expertise. Our analysis examines the 32 highest-paying professions for creative professionals, based on current surveys and market data reflecting the situation in 2025 and forecasts for 2026.

A clear trend toward hybridization is evident: To pursue the most lucrative career paths, it is now essential to move beyond the pursuit of aesthetic excellence. One must engage intensively with data-driven business models and be able to manage complex agent-based ecosystems. Salary increases are moderate, at approximately 3.1% in Germany and 3.3% in Austria, while Switzerland, despite a nominal increase of 2.5%, records the highest real gains in purchasing power due to lower inflation.

What are the biggest factors influencing salaries in 2026?

Before analyzing specific job profiles in detail, it is important to consider the structural drivers that significantly shape wage levels in the creative industries. It appears that the gender pay gap and the divide between academic and non-academic education remain persistent characteristics of the market.

The median annual salary for someone with a university degree is €68,250, while those without an academic degree earn around €51,200. A difference of more than 33% clearly demonstrates the importance of formal qualifications for accessing highly paid management positions.

The size of the company is another significant aspect. Micro-enterprises with fewer than 50 employees often pay salaries of less than €50,000; in contrast, large corporations with over 5,000 employees offer an average of €63,000 and significantly higher compensation for management positions.

In terms of regions , the major cities in southern Germany and Hamburg remain the main hubs for high earners. Munich leads the way with a median gross salary of €64,750, while Frankfurt am Main, at €64,000, also ranks highly.

Attending vocational school is therefore not mandatory. No specific training is required to become a tattoo artist. Tattoo artists come from diverse backgrounds. However, they must be trained in hygiene, sterilization, blood-borne Terms & Conditions , and the prevention of skin damage during their work.

There are also specialized, private tattoo schools that charge tuition fees. However, these schools are not very well regarded in tattoo communities.

It's now common to start with other media before moving on to a human canvas. Many tattoo artists were previously art students. You can also begin an apprenticeship as a tattoo artist in a studio. You'll be expected to purchase your own equipment and sterilization kit, and you won't be paid for the training.

Once sufficient professional experience has been gained, a license must be obtained from the local council. Most experts in the industry state that a tattoo artist is only fully qualified after approximately 5 years of full-time professional experience.

Many tattoo artists are self-employed, and salaries vary considerably. A novice tattoo artist starts with around €18,000 per year. An experienced tattoo artist can earn between €22,000 and €35,000 per year. A tattoo artist who owns their own business and employs others can earn over €65,000 per year. Incidentally, self-employment is also possible after prior personal bankruptcy .

Average annual salary: 21,000 – 120,000 euros

Projected employment growth by 2030: 13%

Another option for those of us with a passion for drawing is to become a professional illustrator. With both freelance and salaried positions available, illustrators play a vital role in all fields that require artistic drawing.

An illustrator creates artistic works that visually accompany books, magazines, and other publications. Core tasks include illustrating children's books, creating marketing materials, or drawing for scientific or medical books and journals.

Illustrator careers can range from magazines and children's books to fashion design and advertising. Depending on their qualifications and overall experience, illustrators can earn an average annual salary between €21,000 and €130,000.

29. Landscape architects / landscape designers

Average annual salary: 58,000 – 75,000 euros

Projected employment growth by 2030: 7%

Landscape architects and landscape designers create parks, gardens, playgrounds, green roofs and other outdoor areas for campuses, recreational facilities, businesses, governments, public authorities and private homes.

To do this, they meet with clients, create site plans and cost estimates, select the materials for landscaping, and analyze environmental reports on soil conditions, such as drainage and energy consumption.

To become a landscape architect, you need at least a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture and a state license, which usually requires completing an internship.

30. University professor of art, drama and music

Average annual salary: 60,000 – 80,000 euros

Projected employment growth by 2030: 12%

These professors typically teach various courses in their specialty to students enrolled at colleges and universities. They may also conduct research, publish primary research, apply for grants to fund their research, or supervise graduate teaching assistants who teach classes.

Depending on the subject and type of educational institution, a professor's educational qualifications can vary. Typically, a Ph.D. in a field related to the subject they will be teaching is required.

A master's degree may be sufficient for some post-secondary teaching positions in public schools. However, some humanities departments at universities may be more interested in the professional experience and contributions an applicant has made in the field.

31. Art Director

Average annual salary: 75,000 – 120,000 euros

Projected employment growth by 2030: 5%

Art directors are responsible for the overall visual style of a product. They determine how a message or concept can best be visually represented and, consequently, decide which photographs, artwork, or other design elements should be used in the production of items ranging from product packaging to media such as magazines, newspapers, and film and television productions.

Most art directors have at least a bachelor's degree in an artistic or design-related field and started years ago in another art-related profession, working their way up to the position of director.

Securing a role as an art director is intended for those aspiring to a more senior leadership position. Art director positions are considered high-level roles and offer an average annual salary of €100,000.

32. Architect

Average annual salary: 65,000 – 95,000 euros

Projected employment growth until 2030: 2%

Architects plan and design residential buildings, factories, office buildings, and other structures. They can work on public or private projects and design both interior and exterior spaces. They typically meet with clients to understand the requirements for a structure and then create scale drawings of possible designs, along with estimates of the expected costs and construction time.

Once commissioned, they oversee the construction site to ensure that the building progress aligns with the architectural plans. Becoming an architect is a three-stage process. First, you must complete at least a bachelor's degree in architecture, gain relevant experience through a paid internship, which typically lasts three years, and then pass the architect registration exam.

The economic role of work experience

In many creative professions, salary development follows a logarithmic curve. While high competition in the early years results in moderate starting salaries (€46,250 in the first year), specialization after five to ten years allows for a significant increase.

  • Starting salary (< 1 year): €46,250
  • After 6 years: €55,500 (approximately 20% increase)
  • After more than 10 years: €59,500 to €88,400 (depending on management responsibility).

It is interesting to note that in the field of media design, salaries often stagnate after ten years (€40,200) unless one moves into a management position or a specialized expert role (e.g., Creative AI). This highlights the importance of lifelong learning and vertical or diagonal career planning.

The transformation of creative work through AI: Impact on 2026

A look at the research data for 2026 reveals that AI will not completely replace humans in the labor market, but it will radically change job profiles. A two-pronged effect can be observed:

1. The decline in repetitive tasks

Activities based on the reproduction of familiar patterns (such as simple image editing, standard layouts, or descriptive texts) are under considerable economic pressure. In these areas, salaries are stagnating or declining in real terms because productivity is significantly increased by AI tools, which in turn inflates the supply of corresponding services.

2. A new beginning in strategic creativity

Jobs that require empathy, a keen sense of different cultures, and the ability to solve complex problems are not only future-proof but are also increasingly valued. "AI fluency" —the competence to confidently use AI systems—is evolving from a specialized qualification to a new general knowledge.

In 2026, the most successful creatives will be those who use AI as a "co-pilot" to augment their human intuition.

The future looks bright for creative professionals who can master digital tools and simultaneously create exceptional, innovative concepts. LinkedIn sees AI engineers and AI consultants as the most important jobs of the future for 2026 and beyond, while solopreneurship is also on the rise due to increased individual productivity.

Our recommendations and strategic advice for young professionals

An analysis of the 32 highest-paid creative professions in 2026 clearly shows that a fundamental shift in value creation is taking place. Money is no longer primarily paid for someone to "produce" (image, text, code) – but for strategically orchestrating which systems produce these artifacts and ensuring their cultural and economic relevance.

What conclusions can be drawn from this?

  1. Hybridization is a must : The distinction between "creatives" and "technicians" is a thing of the past. Highly paid positions (Creative AI Specialist, Technical Artist, Solution Architect) require a comprehensive understanding of both fields.
  2. Responsibility as a salary driver : Those who take on budget or personnel responsibility have the best chance of earning a six-figure salary. From an economic perspective, the progression from "doer" to "strategist" (e.g., from designer to CMO or Head of UX) is almost always advantageous.
  3. Education as job insurance : An academic degree as well as ongoing training in AI governance and design thinking are the best safeguards against the automation of standard jobs.
  4. Empathy as a unique selling point : In a working world that is increasingly determined by algorithms, human skills such as empathy, interpersonal communication and critical judgment are becoming scarce and therefore valuable assets.

In 2026, the market situation for creative professionals will offer an opportunity for self-responsibility.”

Although the era of exceptionally high salary increases is over, the market still offers outstanding career opportunities and financial recognition for those at the forefront of technological and strategic development. The future of creative work is not the end of design, but rather an elevation to a new dimension: it will become more strategically important than ever before.

Living from art

A fundamental need for every artistically creative person is likely to be the ability to live off their art.

To secure one's own existence, it is essential to earn money with art. In fact, nowadays—contrary to the majority perception—many artists can live well from their creative work. Nevertheless, a significant majority of all freelance artists still rely on additional sources of income (e.g., teaching courses, commissioned work, side jobs, etc.).

Recognition as an artist often does not bring immediate financial security. Therefore, artists are often also life artists.

The opportunities to make a living from one's own art have, however, grown significantly due to the internet and social media. As an artist, however, you must be versatile and flexible to succeed. A certain degree of perseverance is also essential.

Customer relations and self-marketing are also important pillars for success as an artist .

In this section, we compile numerous articles, information, tips, and advice to help you make a living from your art.
