Statue “Praying Ephebe” (original size), bronze version

Leochares (375-310 BC) participated in the completion of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, and created the ideal of the godlike, heroic Olympian with the "Praying Ephebe." The eternal flame shone upon the young man in the Diadumenos area at Olympia as he crowned himself with the victor's wreath. He stretches his arms above his head, invoking the blessing of the immortals.

In the 4th century BC, the late Classical Greek sculptor Leochares worked in Athens. Little is known about his life, so most of his works survive as copies. Among his confirmed works is his contribution to the decoration of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus around 350 BC, where he helped construct the Amazon battle frieze. Leochares is also known for his portraits and depictions of gods. He received commissions for the Philippeion at Olympia, where he sculpted members of the royal family of Philip II of Macedon. He also produced many busts of Alexander the Great. His works are characterized by slender proportions and lively movement, making him a key figure in the development of Hellenistic art.
