François Boucher's career began with designs for the Beauvais tapestry manufactory; later he even rose to the position of inspector of the Paris Gobelins Manufactory. But the French court also held him in extremely high esteem as a painter: in 1765, the son of an engraver was appointed director of the Academy and "First Painter to the King," and—another courtly honor—Madame Pompadour secured his services as a drawing instructor. Boucher's works, highly popular in aristocratic circles throughout Europe, exemplify the sensuality of the Rococo period.
