Animal sculpture “Rhinoceros” by Evert den Hartog, black bronze

In his sculptures, Evert den Hartog develops the form and shape of his subjects in such a way that, while he never truly deviates from the real-life model, he simultaneously imbues them with an additional layer of meaning. This can be a moment of tension that he perfectly "freezes" (hence the title of a publication about his work), but he also likes to give his animal sculptures a playful quality, even a distinct touch of humor. In the case of his small rhinoceros, for example, one can hardly avoid recognizing not only the rhinoceros itself, but also an invitation to emulate the animal and observe the course of the world with interest, yet also with equanimity.
