Animals held a special fascination for him. Franz Marc not only studied their anatomy meticulously as an artist, but he also knew a great deal about their behavior and gestures. Animal motifs thus permeate his entire artistic oeuvre, particularly the depiction of horses. There are numerous drawings, the famous small sculpture "Two Horses" from 1908/1909 – and, of course, works that later became almost iconic, such as his "Blue Horse" from 1911.
