Focus on the image: How a frame supports the image's message
A work of art often stands on its own. To ensure it has a place on the wall, there are numerous options for finding the right frame. However, this is often not so easy, as there are significant differences in design and construction.
Every picture needs a frame – but which one?
Since antiquity, people have adorned their homes with artistic paintings. This long history has given rise to many different art styles, from which we can choose our personal favorites today. With the constant evolution of painting techniques, picture frames have also continually changed. As a result, we now benefit from a wide variety of framing options with very different looks and uses.

Opulent Baroque frames for oil paintings
Those who could afford art in the 17th century wanted to display it prominently. The impressive Baroque frame made of precious gold, with its elaborate decorations, perfectly complemented the opulent paintings of the time.
Baroque frames are currently experiencing a small revival. Portraits with an antique look, in particular, unfold their full effect in an opulent frame. Are you the proud owner of a historical painting? Then a custom-made period frame might be just the thing to showcase your artwork.
Since most art lovers no longer live behind thick walls, there are now lighter frame options available that are only superficially gilded and can therefore also be attached to wooden and plastered walls.
Silver frames are suitable for cool colors
Famous names like Monet and Van Gogh shaped the dawn of modernism in art history. The cool gray and blue tones they often used are particularly striking in silver frames. But not all silver is created equal: highly polished frames are especially well-suited to abstract art , while classic paintings in frames with off-white silver tones take their place on the wall with style.
Lightweight aluminum frames offer a cost-effective alternative and can be designed in a simple, modern style or with elaborate decorations.
Wooden frames can look modern or classic
Landowners increasingly discovered fine ash and oak wood as an alternative to the classic Baroque frame. The effect of oil landscape paintings and still lifes from bygone eras is particularly enhanced by a dark wooden frame.

Today, natural wood frames made of pine or poplar are also enjoying increasing popularity. They complement abstract artworks and naive paintings, such as those of Dadaism. A sophisticated solution for delicate-looking paintings in pastel shades is whitewashing the wooden frame according to centuries-old tradition. The grain shimmers subtly through the new white of the frame, creating a particularly soft effect.
Folding frames are practical for posters
Is it art or can it be thrown away? These days, advertising posters from famous fashion designers or concert announcements are increasingly finding their way into our own homes.
For good reason: they are often impressively designed, and we use them to express our personality. A modern snap frame is ideal for displaying posters without any creases. They are made of plastic, lightweight, available in all sizes, and the posters can be changed as often as you like.
Key feature – The frame profile
The frame profile describes the relationship between the picture and the frame. Is the frame curved? Is the frame designed so that the picture fits snugly against the frame?
Wooden throat frames are curved, while panel frames are flat
A concave frame is more solid at the outer edge than at the edge facing the picture. The resulting curvature of the picture frame is its characteristic feature.
So-called panel frames are very flat, so that they are almost flush with the picture. Some panel frames have a raised edge on the side facing away from the picture, which can be decorated in various ways. Drawings, in particular, lose none of their lightness when displayed in panel frames.
Shadow gap frames for canvases, convex frames for large pictures
Shadow gap frames are particularly well-suited for hanging canvases. The picture is framed with a gap so that the outer edges of the picture do not touch the frame. The resulting gap creates a shadow effect, hence the name.
A convex frame consists of four strips with angled ends. This allows individual pieces to be assembled into a rectangular frame of any size. Square formats are also easily achievable with this type of framing. For example, you can find affordable square picture frames at rahmendirekt.de .
The diagonal glue seams usually remain visible, giving the picture frame a rustic look. Because the angled glue edges visually draw the eye away from the picture, this framing method is particularly suitable for large, free-hanging pictures, allowing them to fully unfold their impact and create a very captivating effect.

Protection for your favorite picture – the right glazing
However, the picture frame not only serves as an eye-catching element, it should also protect the artwork from external influences. Therefore, choosing the right glazing is important.
Ordinary glass is cheap, but reflects strongly
Standard glass is the most common and affordable material for covering a picture frame. It is usually 1.7mm thick float glass, which, however, tends to reflect light. This is a significant disadvantage, especially in bright rooms.
Acrylic glass is lightweight and anti-reflective glass minimizes reflections
Special acrylic glass is lighter and extremely break-resistant, which is why it is particularly suitable for large-format picture frames.
Special anti-reflective glass undergoes a chemical treatment during manufacturing. This prevents unwanted reflections of sunlight on the picture frame. However, anti-reflective glass is only effective in frame designs where the picture is not far from the glass; otherwise, the colors will appear washed out.
