Berlin is a unique place when it comes to mobility: Public transport is excellent, parking spaces are scarce (and expensive), and distances can be enormous (Spandau to Köpenick is a world away). For artists, freelancers, and creatives, there's the added challenge of fluctuating income, often needing to transport things spontaneously (canvases, amps, equipment), and taxes playing a significant role.

Car sharing vs. rental cars in Berlin

Berlin is a city with many options in terms of transportation and mobility.

Berlin is a city where, as everyone knows, you don't need a car every day. But there are situations where nothing works without one. An early flight, a weekend trip, multiple appointments across the city, transporting equipment, artwork, and supplies, or spontaneous large-scale shopping trips all require a car. That's precisely when the typical question arises: car sharing or a traditional rental car ? And anyone comparing options for the first time quickly starts wondering if it wouldn't be more sensible to simply look for " car rental Berlin " offers before making a decision.

Both options are perfectly usable, but they differ significantly when considering price, flexibility, and real-world scenarios.

When Berliners are more likely to use car sharing

Carsharing thrives on spontaneity. You open the app, see a free car nearby, and drive off a few minutes later. No counters, no keys, no waiting.

For short trips within the city, car sharing often the most convenient solution. Whether you need to get to an appointment quickly, run some errands, or simply need a ride from A to B, it works practically without a hitch.

Berlin is big, but for 10-20 minute trips between districts, carsharing is hard to beat. You don't have to worry about returning the car or opening hours.

As soon as the journeys get longer, the rules change. Prices rise significantly with many providers, and a full day can be more expensive than renting a car from a traditional rental company. Then there's the return zone: you can only park the car in designated areas of the city. If you're out late at night or during rush hour, you sometimes simply can't find a vehicle nearby.

When a rental car is the better choice

A rental car offers peace of mind. You book in advance, know exactly where the car is, and have it completely to yourself for a whole day or even several days. That's precisely why many Berliners and business travelers opt for a car rental when they're planning more than just a short trip.

For day trips to Potsdam, the lakes, Brandenburg, or longer journeys towards Leipzig or the Baltic Sea, a rental car is almost always cheaper and more relaxing. No zone restrictions, no time limits, no stress about parking at the end of your trip.

Even simple daily schedules – several appointments spread across the city – can often be better managed with a rental car, because you don't have to constantly check the app to see if a car is available.

Of course, there are also obligations: returning the vehicle with a full tank (in most tariffs), a security deposit, and clear rules regarding damages. But in return, you get a vehicle that is reliably available – regardless of the time of day or location.

Price comparison: When is which option cheaper?

A direct comparison reveals a clear picture:

  • Short trips → Carsharing is usually cheaper.
  • Several hours → both options are close together.
  • A full day → Rental cars are cheaper in most cases.
  • A weekend of car sharing quickly becomes expensive.
  • for one week is almost always the sensible choice.

As soon as you drive several longer distances on the same day, the calculation almost always tips in favor of the rental car.

Current price list for Berlin (realistic values)

Provider Art Real price range comment
SIXT share Car sharing ~€0.09/min + day packages from ~€19.99 Prices vary depending on the model and time of day.
Miles Mobility Car sharing from ~€0.79/km Attractive for longer distances, but expensive in the long run.
Free2Move Car sharing / short-term rental from ~30 €/day (with approx. 60 km) Additional costs may apply for late returns.
Getmancar Berlin Car rental / car hire from ~€55/day Different vehicle classes; flexible daily rental.
Kayak (Aggregators) rental car from ~€24/day Cheapest basic offers, often only basic protection.
ADAC / major car rental companies Classic car rental 35–40 €/day Stable rates and solid insurance packages.

How the differences look in various everyday situations

  • Getting to the airport : Carsharing can be inconvenient with luggage and several people. Rental cars are more reliable here: reserved in advance, predictable, no dependence on availability.
  • Short distances in Berlin: Carsharing's strongest area of application: fast, flexible, right around the corner.
  • A day trip to Brandenburg or the lakes: a rental car is the clear winner. No zones, no unpredictable costs.
  • A day packed with appointments: Car sharing becomes risky in terms of price. Rental cars remain consistently predictable.
  • Spontaneous errands: This is where carsharing shines: Take a car, do the job, park it again.

Which option is generally suitable for which target group?

  • For tourists: Car sharing is suitable for city trips, while rental cars are the better choice for excursions.
  • Berliners : A mix of both – depending on the daily schedule.
  • Business travelers : Rental cars are almost always the most sensible option because appointments need to be planned.

Deep Dive: Scenarios for Artists in Detail

A. The “I need to transport my equipment/artwork” case

Robben & Wientjes used to be the dominant player here. Please note: The classic Robben stations have been closed since 2023 (taken over by Europcar/Buchbinder).

You need alternatives:

  • For the spontaneous ( Miles )Miles charges by the kilometer (approx. €1.19/km for vans + €1-2 unlock fee).
    • Advantage: Are you stuck in traffic on the A100 or do you need 40 minutes to load at the loading ramp? It costs you almost nothing extra (only parking minutes during the stop-over, approx. €0.29/min).
    • Disadvantage: Expensive if you have to travel far (e.g. to Potsdam and back).
  • For those who like to plan ahead ( “The new seals” ) Allround car rental and CarlundCarla have established themselves here .
    • CarlundCarla : Often offers half-day rates (e.g., 5 hours from approx. €29) or full-day rates (from approx. €49). Ideal for planned moves or set transports.
    • Allround : Often still has that direct, down-to-earth Berlin charm and good truck fleets.

B. The “Opening & Meeting” case (within the ring)

Free-floating carsharing (Sixt Share, ShareNow/Free2move, Miles) almost always wins here

The “Berlin Gold” advantage: With car sharing cars from these providers, you can park for free in almost all public parking spaces in the business area in Berlin (even in the expensive parking management zones in Mitte, Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg).

Money-saving tip: When traffic is light, choose minute-based billing (Sixt/ShareNow). When there's a traffic jam (rush hour), choose miles (kilometer-based billing).

C. The “Brandenburg excursion” or “filming day in the surrounding area”

For a day trip (e.g., location scouting), a carsharing day package is often worthwhile (book in the app before starting your journey!).

Example calculation : A Miles day package (e.g. 1 day & 50km) often costs around €40-50 including petrol/charging.

Caution: As soon as you drive more kilometers (e.g. to the Müritz), carsharing becomes extremely expensive, as each additional kilometer costs a considerable amount.

D. The Tour / The Weekend (Long Distance)

Are you going to Hamburg with the band or visiting family in Bavaria? Rent a regular car.

For rental periods of 2-3 days or more, Sixt, Europcar or Enterprise are usually cheaper than car sharing, as the kilometers are often unlimited or generously calculated and the daily rate decreases (note weekend specials!).

Platform tip: Check portals like “Billiger-Mietwagen” or “Check24” for comparison.

Special tips for freelancers & artists

🧾 Tax & Accounting

The tax office scrutinizes car expenses closely.

  • Collecting receipts: Carsharing is ideal for freelancers because you receive an exact invoice for every trip. You don't need to keep a logbook if you can attribute the trip to business activities.
  • Separation : Ideally, create two accounts (e.g., a private and a business account in the app) or use a credit card that is only for business expenses. This will save you hours on bookkeeping.
  • Input tax : Make sure that the invoices show the VAT (all major suppliers do).

🅿️ Parking in “Creative Districts”

In districts like Neukölln (Reuterkiez), Kreuzberg (Wrangelkiez) or Mitte, almost everything is a parking zone.

  • Rental car: You have to buy parking tickets! (This can get expensive for a day shoot).
  • Carsharing (free-floating): Parking tickets are not required in public spaces (please note the business area!). This is often the deciding factor for carsharing in the city.

🧳 Insurance & Deposit

  • Rental cars: They often block a high deposit (€200 - €500+) on your credit card. Your card must have sufficient funds.
  • Carsharing: usually no deposit, pay-as-you-go. However, the excess in case of accidents is often high (e.g., €1000). Check if you want to reduce the excess for about €1 per trip (“protection package”) if you are transporting expensive equipment and are stressed.

Conclusion: Both models have specific advantages

Car sharing is generally more advantageous for short, spontaneous trips. Rental cars are suitable for days full of travel, weekends out of town, and any trip that covers more than a few kilometers.

For short trips within Berlin, Miles (Transporter) is convenient with Terms & Conditions ; for planned trips, CarlundCarla the best value. If you only need to get from A to B yourself, use Sixt Share/ShareNow because of the parking benefit. As soon as you leave the Berlin Ring or are traveling for more than 24 hours: go to a traditional car rental company.

And anyone who wants to compare several options will quickly realize that it makes sense to check in advance which car rental offers in Berlin are actually the better solution for the individual occasion.
