An eventful life in pictures

Frida Kahlo is by far the best -known painter Mexico, if not Latin America. The urgent, small -format images articulate Frida Kahlos physical and mental suffering, their grief and tragedy. Her self -portraits are the most honest and truthful expression of what she feels, she writes in 1939.

"They thought I was a surrealist, but I wasn't. I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality." (Frida Kahlo)

Frida Kahlo was certainly one of the most fascinating artists of the 20th century. Her life story is full of drama, tragedy and overwhelming zest for life.

Frida Kahlo's famous self-portraits reflect her profound emotions. Her morphine addiction and the associated pain contributed significantly to her seeing herself as a scarred person, something she attempted to depict in her paintings. One of her most famous works is the self-portrait "The Two Fridas" (1939) . It shows Frida Kahlo as twin girls with two distinct faces—one beautiful and one tormented.

The artistic source of inspiration for Frida Kahlo is next to herself, the Mexican folklore with its inexhaustible colors and the elements of nature. This creates Frida Kahlo as an icon-the traditional Mexican Tehuana costume becomes your trademark and Frida Kahlo itself the symbol of her time.

Kahlo died of pulmonary tuberculosis in early July 1954 at the age of only 47. It left a great estate of works, the popularity of which continues to this day and significantly influenced many famous artists. Much about Frida Kahllos is still the subject of many interpretations and speculations - which is not surprising due to the influence that she had on the art scene.

Because of her political attitude, her fighting for women, indigenous and underprivileged, her toughness and her overwhelming will to get no adversity of a society characterized by Machismo, Frida Kahlo has been celebrated in the United States as a galosic figure of the Mexican women's movement in the USA.

The Hollywood adaptation of her life in 2002 with Salma Hayek in the leading role also contributes to the postumen worldwide popularity.

Frida Kahlos Werk Today

Frida Kahlos pictures achieve high prices; "Raices" painting (roots) was auctioned in 2006 for $ 5.5 million. There are rumors that the anonymous buyer is said to have been the pop icon Madonna, who already owns two other works Kahlos.

However, the paintings who are still home in Frida Kahlos are not allowed to leave Diego Rivera Mexico according to their heir.

Frida Kahlo's entire work consists of only 143 oil paintings. Only the Dolores Olmendo Patño collection with around 25 pictures and the Gelmann collection with 17 pictures include a existence of their work, which was previously also exhibited outside Mexico.

In the immersive exhibition “Viva Frida Kahlo”, the audience now has the opportunity to experience Frida Kahlos work almost entirely: With 130 pictures, “Viva Frida Kahlo” the most extensive presentation of the works Frida Kahlos in one place.
