Dubai's anticipation for the highly anticipated concert with cultural icon Vladimir Spivakov and the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia was palpable days before the event. The two-part performance took place on the evenings of November 27th and 28th, 2025, and stood out as one of the season's most significant cultural events, attracting both local and international visitors.

The National Philharmonic Orchestra, now twelve years old, is among the world's most distinguished symphony orchestras. Music lovers admire its artistic depth, refined unity, and the impressive presence of its conductor. The captivating program includes masterpieces by Grieg and Tchaikovsky, as well as the electrifying Carmen Suite by Bizet-Shchedrin. This suite holds special significance for Spivakov. Rodion Shchedrin , one of the most renowned Russian composers of the 20th century, who recently passed away, created it from Georges Bizet's opera Carmen.

Vladimir Spivakov's return to Dubai

Maestro Vladimir Spivakov returned to Dubai Opera this November. The arrival of this world-renowned violinist and conductor signified more than just another stop on an international tour. The Dubai stage represented a renewal of his deep artistic connection.

A video report about this special event can be found here. It was produced and kindly provided Veer Media Production

Why the Dubai Opera holds a special place for Spivakov

The Dubai Opera is among the most impressive modern concert venues in Spivakov's global career. The maestro never misses an opportunity to express how special each return to Dubai is for him. He recently shared at a press conference that the venue's unique features create an exceptional environment for classical music. These qualities make the emirate one of his favorite performance destinations.

The maestro appreciates how classical music continues to flourish throughout the region. This cultural growth allows his art to reach new audiences and makes every visit to Dubai meaningful.

His previous performances with the Moscow Virtuosi

Before joining the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, Spivakov thrilled audiences in Dubai with the acclaimed Moscow Chamber Orchestra. The New York Times praised the Moscow Virtuosi as "first-rate string players brought to perfection by Maestro Spivakov," highlighting his artistic legacy.

Spivakov conducted the Moscow Virtuosi at the Dubai World Trade Center during the Dubai Classics in February 2015. The performance marked the orchestra's 35th anniversary world tour. He shared his enthusiasm at the time with the following words:

Every member of our orchestra is excited to meet and inspire both existing fans in Dubai and those who may be hearing their very first concert orchestra.”

The rise of his relationship with the audience in Dubai

Spivakov has developed a deep connection with concertgoers in Dubai over the past few years. He often praises the high level of attentiveness shown by the local audience. His relationship with music lovers in Dubai has evolved from introducing classical repertoire to deepening their appreciation.

“The audience here listens not only with their ears, but also with their hearts,” Spivakov once said about the audience in Dubai. This perception shapes his choice of programming and his performance style in the emirate.

His return with the National Philharmonic Orchestra demonstrated how far this relationship has come. The transition from chamber performances to a full-fledged symphonic experience preserves the intimacy and connection that characterized his earlier appearances.

A look at the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia

The National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia began its journey in January 2003. Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Ministry of Culture founded this 20-year-old musical institution, which has become a musical symbol of Russia.

Education and global recognition

Russia's outstanding instrumentalists joined forces with talented newcomers to create this orchestra. This blend of seasoned musicians and fresh talent proved to be a recipe for success. After two decades of performances, NPR

The orchestra's fame extends far beyond Russia. They have performed throughout Europe, the United States, China, Japan, and the CIS countries. Every year they participate in the International Music Festival in Colmar, France. Their performances in world-class venues have solidified their reputation for musical excellence and Russian character.

Spivakov's role as Artistic Director

Vladimir Spivakov has led the orchestra as Artistic Director and Chief Conductor since its inception. His appointment in 2003 coincided with his role as President of the Moscow International House of Music, which became the orchestra's home.

The main goal of the NPR under Spivakov was to carry on the legacy of three legendary Russian conductors: Evgeny Mravinsky, Kirill Kondrashin, and Evgeny Svetlanov. Spivakov also helped create the orchestra's unique sound by blending old and new techniques.

What distinguishes this orchestra

The musicians of the orchestra are distinguished by their passionate performances. Many musicians are known for "jumping up and down" during concerts. This raw energy sets them apart from other orchestras.

Their repertoire ranges from early classical symphonies to modern works. They regularly perform world premieres of new works, unique transcriptions, and special concert series. Critics have praised their recordings on top labels such as Sony Classical and Spivakov Sound .

Young talent finds a home at NPR. The orchestra runs a program for aspiring conductors and offers performance opportunities to emerging musicians. This focus on education reinforces its unique place in classical music.

The soloists in the spotlight: Dali Gutserieva and Adam Gutseriev

Two exceptional sibling soloists enriched the concert in Dubai with their musical talent. They have been captivating audiences worldwide for years.

His success continued with victories at the Grand Prize Virtuoso in Salzburg and the Manchester Music Competition , as well as awards in Brussels and Paris. Adam is currently studying at the Kalaidos University of Music in Berlin while building an impressive performance career.

Her previous appearances in Dubai

These talented artists are returning to Dubai Opera after their acclaimed performances two years ago. The siblings astonished audiences in Dubai when they performed with renowned conductors such as Vladimir Fedoseyev .

Sibling synergy on stage

The siblings create extraordinary performances with their musical chemistry. Their unique combination has secured them a place in international classical music – Dali's "full, warm and velvety" cello tone harmonizes beautifully with Adam's sensitive piano artistry.

Highlights of the concert program: two nights full of masterpieces

The concert program in Dubai offered two extraordinary evenings of musical virtuosity, ranging from passionate romance to thunderous drama.

November 27: Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saëns and Carmen Suite

Tchaikovsky's Fantasy Overture "Romeo and Juliet" opened the first night. Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto No. 1 followed, with Dalí Gutserieva as soloist. The evening concluded with the electrifying Carmen Suite by Bizet and Shchedrin. This piece holds a special place in Vladimir Spivakov's symphonic repertoire.

November 28: Grieg's Peer Gynt and Piano Concerto, Tchaikovsky Ballet Suites

The second evening featured Grieg's popular "Peer Gynt" Suite No. 1, which includes "Morning Mood," "The Death of Åse," "Anitra's Dance," and "In the Hall of the Mountain King." Adam Gutseriev performed Grieg's Piano Concerto. The orchestra then presented excerpts from Tchaikovsky's celebrated ballet suites.

The emotional arc of the evenings

Each concert took the audience on a unique musical journey. The first night flowed from Tchaikovsky's romantic intensity through Saint-Saëns' technical brilliance and ended with Carmen's passionate drama. The second evening began with Grieg's atmospheric landscapes and built to Tchaikovsky's majestic ballet compositions.

Tributes to Rodion Shchedrin and Maya Plisetskaya

The Carmen Suite holds special significance as a tribute to the composer Rodion Shchedrin, who recently passed away. He created this masterpiece for his wife, the legendary ballet dancer Maya Plisetskaya. The audience in Dubai was privileged to experience this moving tribute just a few days after what would have been Plisetskaya's 100th birthday on November 20, 2025. This performance thus celebrated two remarkable artistic legacies.

Adam and Dali Gutseriewa successfully concluded their 2025 guest performance season at the sold-out Dubai Opera. The musicians look forward to new countries in the new year – but the audience's love remains unchanged.
