Fabric qualities, cutting and instructions

When it comes to sewing , you should first familiarize yourself with the different fabric qualities. When do you need sturdy cotton fabric, and which garments can be made from jersey? In this context, you also need to know which needle size to use for which type of fabric and when the feed dogs should be lowered while sewing.

Cutting out the fabric is no problem either, as there are patterns provided. Each package lists how many meters of fabric are needed for the respective model and which materials are best suited for the garment. The paper patterns are transferred to the fabric, cut out, and then you can start sewing.

Search the internet for suitable videos that explain how to turn fabric right side out, hem, insert zippers, and bind edges with bias tape. Alternatively, you can take a complete sewing course to acquire basic skills. The internet is full of opportunities waiting to be discovered.

The facets of the colorful fashion world

Once you've mastered the basic techniques of sewing, your imagination knows no bounds. Replenish your wardrobe with new clothes. Sew your children the raincoats that aren't available in stores.

Or register a business and use your talent to earn money.

Sewn items can also be sold in the pet supplies sector or as accessories . Dog beds and winter coats, floor cushions, glove-shaped pot holders, heating pads, covers for baby hot water bottles, keychains, bed linens, quilts, and personalized baby blankets – there's almost nothing that can't be sewn and sold.

Tools for the perfect appearance

If you want to design your own clothing, a dress form a worthwhile investment. This way, you can check the fit of the garment's cut and creative ideas like additional pleats or puff sleeves. Dress forms are also essential tools for creating knitwear.

If the sweater or jacket is knitted, the garment needs to be wet so that the knitted stitches can take their final shape. If you lay a still-damp sweater flat, it won't dry properly. In addition, wrinkles will form on the sleeves.

If the knitted piece is allowed to dry on a dress form, the sleeves will hang vertically and won't crease. The weight of the garment also makes it slightly longer, so you can even save a few rows of knitting beforehand.

Where is it sold?

For selling accessories and clothing that you want to design yourself, you can find platforms on the internet such as Etsy, Amazon Handmade or eBay .

In recent years, several providers have adopted Etsy's concept and offer attractive marketplaces at affordable prices. Some charge listing fees and commissions on sales.

Nevertheless, due to their size and brand recognition, these platforms offer a more effective entry into the fashion world than your own online shop. You can open your own online shop once you have tested your products in the market.

Design your own clothes – creative freedom

As a designer, you can really let your creativity run wild in the fashion industry. It doesn't have to be just about new clothes, as sustainability is also of utmost importance in this field. Fashion changes every season, but at that point, the clothes are far from worn out. Small alterations to worn textiles, on the other hand, can work wonders and transform used pieces back into fashion trends.

Long shirts can be cut open at the hem and transformed into fringed shirts. If a favorite shirt has become a little too tight, or if a growing baby bump needs more room, triangles can be cut out of the front and replaced with a larger piece of fabric in a triangular shape.

Outdated sweaters get double-length cuffs, children's blouses benefit from appliqués, and if a shirt has completely gone out of fashion, it can become an eye-catcher again with cut-off sleeves.

Printing on textiles yourself – no problem with an iron and transfer film

A shirt without a message? That doesn't have to be the case, because clothing is perfect for conveying messages or carrying around a picture of your beloved two- and four-legged friends. Anyone who wants to personalize a garment and owns a printer and an iron is perfectly equipped for such a project. All you need is transfer paper, and you're ready to go.

Transfer film serves as a carrier layer for a design. The desired design is therefore not applied directly to the fabric (from which it could easily detach), but is transferred by a printer onto an intermediate layer (transfer film). This is then ironed onto the garment, and the new garment is finished.

This method allows you designs to textiles, glass, or porcelain . Please note that different transfer films are available for light and dark textiles, differing in coating thickness.

The only disadvantage of this technique: The transfer foil remains noticeable.

Therefore, cut out your design as precisely as possible before transferring it to the shirt. Since the foil bonds with the knit fabric, elasticity is lost in this area, and the material appears somewhat stiffer. This effect is more pronounced when the designs are applied to dark clothing.

The transfer film used for this technique is thicker than that used for transferring designs onto light-colored fabrics. Therefore, the printed areas are more noticeable on dark clothing. With this printing technique, washing and ironing should always be done inside out to protect the design from abrasion.

Design your own clothing for free – have hoodies printed

your creativity in the fashion world even without a sewing machine . If you're interested in printing shirts and hoodies, the internet offers various platforms.

If you only want to delight friends and relatives with your creations, you've come to the right place. You can choose from various cuts and colors, upload and place your own design, or add text of your choice to the garment. After approval, your shirt or sweater will be produced and shipped to you.

Custom printing on clothing has long been a popular trend. Who wouldn't want their favorite cat or loyal family dog on a shirt? Or the name of their newborn on a onesie?

Nowadays, convictions are worn in the form of statements on a shirt, and those who wear the periodic table of elements on their back help the person behind them in the chemistry exam.

The perfect start to self-employment

For aspiring business owners and entrepreneurs, print-on-demand the perfect way to start a business risk-free. All that matters is the idea that will be printed on the garment. Everything else is handled by the online providers.

Spreadshirt and Printful ( here to go directly to the provider) are just two providers of this print-on-demand service (printing when ordered) that have dedicated themselves to this topic.

Printful - Print hoodies and earn money with print-on-demand products

You don't pay anything upfront, you don't have to buy any shirts, and you don't have to deal with shipping. Starting a business couldn't be safer. If you have unusual ideas for lettering or logos, you can also have them designed. Many creative professionals on the Fiverr will create designs according to your specifications.

They place these on clothing, mugs, towels, or other items in their shop and publish the offer. Payment is only made upon purchase, so in the worst-case scenario, nothing happens.

Living from art

A fundamental need for every artistically creative person is likely to be the ability to live off their art.

To secure one's own existence, it is essential to earn money with art. In fact, nowadays—contrary to the majority perception—many artists can live well from their creative work. Nevertheless, a significant majority of all freelance artists still rely on additional sources of income (e.g., teaching courses, commissioned work, side jobs, etc.).

Recognition as an artist often does not bring immediate financial security. Therefore, artists are often also life artists.

The opportunities to make a living from one's own art have, however, grown significantly due to the internet and social media. As an artist, however, you must be versatile and flexible to succeed. A certain degree of perseverance is also essential.

Customer relations and self-marketing are also important pillars for success as an artist .

In this section, we compile numerous articles, information, tips, and advice to help you make a living from your art.
