Bronze sculpture “Bull” (1995) by Dieter Finke
The pounding of the hooves is almost physically palpable, dust swirls up, hot breath seems to envelop the viewer: “I want to depict the essence of the animal more than the animal itself,” says Dieter Finke. The sculptor masterfully reduces the archetypal cultural symbol, the bull, to its elemental structures.
Sculpture in fine bronze, limited worldwide edition of only 199 copies.
Cast using the lost-wax process, finely polished, patinated, with signature and foundry mark.
Format 68 x 29 cm.

Born in Berlin in 1939, Dieter Finke discovered his artistic expressiveness at an early age. From 1959 to 1965, he studied sculpture under Paul Dierkes and Renee Sintenis at the Berlin University of the Arts. He continually expanded and refined his creative approach to material and color, form and space. His wood and bronze sculptures are reduced to their essence. Particularly in his delicate animal sculptures, the form is suggested rather than fully realized, leaving ample room for the viewer's imagination. Finke lived and worked alternately in Berlin and New York. His prodigious creative energy extended to painting, drawing, sculptural objects, and photo collages, resulting in an extensive body of work exhibited in renowned galleries in Berlin, Hanover, Hamburg, and New York. Dieter Finke died in 2011.
