About Kurt Arentz 1934-2014: The German sculptor and painter was born in Cologne in 1934, the son of a long-established family of artisans from the Bergisches Land region. He initially learned a trade, but from 1979 onwards, he pursued his own artistic career. His early work consisted of still lifes in oil and pastel, as well as bronze portraits of prominent figures such as Franz Josef Strauss and Herbert von Karajan. Later, he turned primarily to animal subjects, emphasizing their species-specific characteristics. As a remarkable self-taught artist, Kurt Arentz developed a unique visual language. Beyond academic experimentation, yet also far removed from all naturalistic clichés, he shaped symbols of vital nature with his hands. His ideals of a still-intact world transport us, as it were, into the wild. Arentz abstracts the animal as a being in itself. In doing so, he succeeded in placing his works in an era of timeless relevance.
