Leon Löwentraut is considered the face of a new generation of artists who are bringing fresh energy to the international art scene. The talented artist has been painting since the age of seven and achieved worldwide recognition within just a few years. In 2020, the US business magazine Forbes ranked him third on its prestigious "30 Under 30" of significant emerging talents.
Leon Löwentraut's paintings both captivate and polarize – both the public and the media. His works, which fetch between 20,000 and 70,000 euros, have already been exhibited in renowned museums and galleries worldwide, including in New York, London, Copenhagen, Madrid, and Zurich.
The exhibition openings of artist Leon Löwentraut have become international highlights of the art world. Now, the painter Leon Löwentraut, who lives and works primarily in Portugal, presents his new series of works in the solo show " LANDSCAPES" in Madrid – a fascinating fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern expression.
LANDSCAPES in Madrid: new series of works in focus
In the heart of Madrid, the artist Leon Löwentraut presented his new series of works “LANDSCAPES” in the newly opened Gerhardt Braun Gallery .
After three years, the Gerhardt Braun Gallery in Madrid is once again dedicating a solo exhibition to the young German artist Leon Löwentraut. Located in the chic Salamanca district, the gallery will present twelve selected acrylic works from his "Landscapes" series, as well as eight of his renowned charcoal drawings. The LANDSCAPES series marks a significant step in the artistic development of Leon Löwentraut. Gallery owner Gerhardt Braun emphasizes:
"The retrospective provides a comprehensive overview of Leon Löwentraut's current work.".
The 27-year-old's abstract landscape paintings were inspired by his travels to southern France, Sardinia and Tanzania, but also by his work in his studio in southern Portugal, where he has lived for four years.
“When I paint, I forget everything around me – sometimes I feel like I’m flying.”
Leon Löwentraut explained, in keeping with an earlier spatial installation from 2022. This feeling was made tangible for visitors through 3D scans, motion-capture technology, and even measurements of his brainwaves during the painting process.
Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences awarded the Düsseldorf-based artist a teaching position in the Virtual Design . The topic was "Future Exhibition Design ." The aim was to develop intelligent staging formats for the art sector to make analog art more tangible through digital means. The result was the interactive spatial installation "VOLAR ," which makes the creative process tangibly comprehensible for visitors. "VOLAR" was presented in 2022 at the Gerhardt Braun Gallery in Madrid.
In 2023, the "Volar" project received double gold from the Art Directors Club (ADC) ( Background: The ADC competition annually awards the most creative works in German-speaking countries.).
Leon Löwentraut: Between Tradition and Modernity
artistic style exists in a captivating tension between tradition and modernity. He describes his painting as "expressive-abstract" with powerful colors. His colorful, large-format works show clear influences from Pablo Picasso , Henri Matisse , Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Jackson Pollock .
On December 1, 2023, Leon Löwentraut was awarded the Ernst Barlach Prize for Fine Arts by the Ernst Barlach Society Hamburg. All rights reserved by Leon Löwentraut. This photograph was provided by the Gerhardt Braun Gallery.
Löwentraut's works are created spontaneously and impulsively. The artist prefers to paint on the floor, using his entire body, accompanied by loud music – techno, soul, classical. His themes are diverse, dealing with humanity and interpersonal relationships, and offering insight into Löwentraut's view of the world.
In addition to his colorfully expressive paintings and his sensational art actions, his artistic repertoire includes his virtuoso charcoal drawings – charcoal on handmade paper – which were first presented to the public in 2020, as well as bronze and stainless steel sculptures.
Particularly noteworthy is Löwentraut's ability to reinterpret traditional art forms. In previous exhibitions, he explored the formal language of the Renaissance and Baroque periods , including the works of the Spanish court painter Diego Velázquez. He also revisited the tondo (round painting), a popular pictorial form in the 15th century.
His compositions are characterized by superimposed layers. He places figures on luminous areas of color, and above them, a variety of lines, strokes, and curves.
“I don’t like to talk about my feelings. But I can express myself on the screen.”
Despite being rejected by the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Löwentraut forged his own path. His painting style has changed, however: his more recent works are no longer as colorful as those of previous years. He prefers to paint at night, accompanied by classical music, and once he has begun, he usually works without interruption until completion.
International presence and social messages
Leon Löwentraut's worldwide acclaim is reflected in numerous international exhibitions. His works have already been presented in New York, London, Berlin, Florence, St. Petersburg, Copenhagen, and Singapore. At his exhibition in Singapore, the paintings sold out completely within just two hours.
The 27-year-old is considered a pioneer of a new generation of artists and collectors, bringing fresh energy to the scene. His exhibition openings are known for being spectacular. The exceptional young artist has well over a million followers on Instagram.
His paintings have already been shown in museums such as the Kunstforum Wien , the historically significant Biblioteca Nazionale Marcianain Venice , the Bavarian National Museum in Munich , the Osthaus Museum in Hagen , the Pushkin Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as in galleries, for example in New York, Miami, London, Madrid, Hamburg, Ibiza, Copenhagen, Zurich and Paris.
His works are also presented at important art fairs such as Art Karlsruhe, Art Miami, Luxembourg ART WEEK, Art Toronto and Estampa Contemporary Art Fair Madrid.
Since 2018, one of Leon Löwentraut's paintings has adorned the lobby of the NRW state parliament.
Löwentraut's commitment to social issues is particularly noteworthy . As part of the UNESCO-#Art4GlobalGoals project, he artistically interpreted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. His paintings address topics such as climate protection, social justice, and education.
The Global Gate – one of the world's most impressive mobile art installations – represents a highlight. This artwork, 21 meters high and 24 meters wide, was initially presented at Frankfurt Airport and later in front of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The five passageways of the arch-like structure explain the Sustainable Development Goals in twelve different languages.
During the Corona pandemic, Löwentraut also transformed the Düsseldorf television tower into a memorial with an impressive light installation. Furthermore, at the “Sylt Art Fair,” and his gallerist supported young artists who were particularly affected by the Corona restrictions.
LANDSCAPES: from interpersonal encounters to Mother Nature
In his figurative-abstract works, Leon Löwentraut primarily explores interpersonal encounters and relationships. His second solo exhibition since 2022 in Madrid focuses on the artist's perspective on nature, which, according to Löwentraut, we don't always treat with sufficient care. Löwentraut's distinctive style remains unmistakable in this series as well.
