Leon Löwentraut's paintings both excite and polarize – both the public and the media. His works, which are priced between €20,000 and €70,000, have been exhibited in renowned museums and galleries worldwide, including New York, London, Copenhagen, Madrid, and Zurich.
The artist Leon Löwentraut's exhibition openings have become international highlights of the art world. Now, the painter Leon Löwentraut, who lives and works primarily in Portugal, presents his new series of works in the solo show " LANDSCAPES" in Madrid – a fascinating fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern expression.
LANDSCAPES in Madrid: new series in focus
In the heart of Madrid, the artist Leon Löwentraut presented his new series of works “LANDSCAPES” in the newly opened Gerhardt Braun Gallery .
After three years, the Gerhardt Braun Gallery in Madrid is once again dedicating a solo exhibition to the young German artist Leon Löwentraut. The LANDSCAPES series marks a significant developmental step in Leon Löwentraut's artistic work. Gallery owner Gerhardt Braun emphasizes:
“The exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of Leon Löwentraut’s current work.”
The 27-year-old's abstract landscape paintings were inspired by his travels to southern France, Sardinia and Tanzania, but also by his work in his studio in southern Portugal, where he has lived for four years.
When I paint, I forget everything around me – sometimes I feel like I’m flying,”
Leon Löwentraut explained, fittingly referring to a previous spatial installation from 2022. This feeling was made tangible for visitors through 3D scans, motion capture technology, and even measurements of his brain waves during the painting process.
Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences awarded the Düsseldorf-based artist a teaching position in the Virtual Design , with the topic "Future Exhibition Design ." The goal was to develop intelligent presentation formats for the art sector to make analogue art more tangible with digital possibilities. The result is the interactive spatial installation "VOLAR ," which presents the creative process to visitors in a sensory and comprehensible way. "VOLAR" was presented in 2022 at the Gerhardt Braun Gallery in Madrid.
In 2023, the Art Directors Club (ADC) awarded the project “Volar” double gold ( Background: The ADC competition annually honors the most creative works in German-speaking countries).
Leon Löwentraut: Between Tradition and Modernity
artistic style oscillates between tradition and modernity. He describes his painting as "expressive-abstract" with vibrant colors. His colorful, large-format works show clear influences from Pablo Picasso , Henri Matisse , Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Jackson Pollock .

Löwentraut's works are created spontaneously and impulsively. The artist prefers to paint on the floor, using his entire body, accompanied by loud music—techno, soul, classical. His themes are diverse, dealing with people and interpersonal relationships, and provide insight into Löwentraut's view of the world.
In addition to his colorfully expressive paintings and his sensational art actions, his artistic repertoire includes his virtuoso charcoal drawings – charcoal crayon on handmade paper – which were first presented to the public in 2020, as well as bronze and stainless steel sculptures.
Löwentraut's ability to reinterpret traditional art forms is particularly remarkable. In previous exhibitions, he explored the formal language of the Renaissance and Baroque periods , including the works of the Spanish court painter Diego Velázquez. He also explored the tondo (round painting), a popular pictorial form in the 15th century.
His compositions are characterized by superimposed layers. He places figures on bright, colored surfaces, and above them, diverse lines, strokes, and curves.
I don't like to talk about my feelings. But on screen, I can express myself."
the artist once explained in a Mirrors interview .
Despite rejection by the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Löwentraut developed his own path. His painting style, however, has changed: his more recent paintings are no longer as colorful as in previous years. He prefers to paint at night, accompanied by classical music, and once he has begun, he usually works without interruption until completion.

Löwentraut's commitment to social issues is particularly noteworthy . As part of the UNESCO- #Art4GlobalGoals project, he artistically interpreted the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals. His paintings address topics such as climate protection, social justice, and education.
The Global Gate —one of the world's most impressive mobile art installations—represents a highlight. This 21-meter-high and 24-meter-wide work of art was first presented at Frankfurt Airport and later in front of Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The five gateways of the archway-like structure explain the sustainability goals in twelve different languages.
During the coronavirus pandemic, Löwentraut also transformed the Düsseldorf TV Tower into a memorial with an impressive light installation. At the Sylt Art Fair, and his gallery owner also supported young artists who were particularly affected by the coronavirus restrictions.
LANDSCAPES: from interpersonal encounters to Mother Nature
In his figurative-abstract works, Leon Löwentraut primarily addresses interpersonal encounters and relationships. This second solo show after his 2022 exhibition in Madrid focuses on the artist's view of nature, which, according to Löwentraut, we don't always treat with enough care. Löwentraut's signature remains unmistakable in this series as well.
