Sotheby’s 50th anniversary in Asia, Sotheby’s Hong Kong held an evening of auctions under a marquee this autumn season.
New records were set, including the portrait of “ Paulette Jourdain” by Amedeo Modigliani , which is now considered the most valuable Western work of modern art and was auctioned in Asia for the first time (see Sotheby's Asia: Hong Kong Sales & Exhibition 2023).

To maintain the momentum of the week, the Leshantang Collection Chinese artworks, modern Chinese paintings , and classical Chinese paintings from the Tsai I-Ming Collection .
Highlights include an outstanding bottle in the Famille Rose and Doucai styles, as well as seals from the Yongzheng period – possibly unique pieces of their kind.
As an impressive example of the significant role played by Sotheby's in assembling major art collections, Chinese Works of Art also presents a special collection called “ Heaven and Earth: The Collection of an Aesthete Part 1” .
This unique collection belongs to a single owner and includes as its highlight an imperial Khotan green jade bi disc from the Qing Dynasty with an original bronze dragon stand from the Qianlong period.
Fine Chinese Paintings section features several exquisitely curated collections. Among them is Chang Chun's collection of works, which were gifted to him by his close friend Zhang Daqian.
On the other hand, there is the remarkable collection of Karen Wang , daughter of Wong Nan-ping.
One of the highlights of this auction is the breathtaking painting “Verdant Mountains of Summer Spirit” from 1968 by Zhang Daqian . It comes from an American private collection and impresses with its vibrant use of color.
