An artistic journey of discovery across different continents

Today, art enthusiasts have far more opportunities to art from different perspectives. Sculptures, canvases, and other artworks can be found not only in the gallery next door, but also online and even from every continent on Earth.

Contemporary African Art

The Soul of Africa gallery, for example, serves as a gateway to the multifaceted and dynamic art scene of Africa in Munich, the Bavarian metropolis of southern Germany. There, vibrant colors, profound motifs, and innovative techniques captivate the viewer. African artists often weave traditional elements with modern concepts, making their works particularly fascinating.

During the 20th century, African art often viewed merely as an exotic decorative object in curiosity shops. Fortunately, this has changed over time.

In the 21st century, modern and contemporary African art has found its way into renowned art exhibitions and museums worldwide, including Tate Modern in London, MoMA in New York, and Documenta . This demonstrates that African art has now taken its rightful place in the international art world.

The contemporary art scene in Africa is characterized by a vibrant diversity of creative talents who navigate between tradition and modernity. Their works reflect both local roots and global influences, creating a fascinating mosaic of artistic expressions.

With over 1.2 billion inhabitants in 59 countries and a rich cultural diversity, a unification of this art landscape is virtually impossible. From artistic collections to gallery sales and social statements: contemporary African artists use their art as a voice for social and political concerns.

The scene is characterized by its diversity, innovative strength, and conceptual depth, addressing important socio-economic realities of the continent. Identity, environmental protection, corruption, and xenophobia are just some of the multifaceted themes explored conceptual art , minimalism , environmental and landscape art , hyperrealism , pop art , and street art

In recent decades, international recognition of contemporary African art steadily increased. Independent curator André Magnin, active since 1980, has played a pivotal role in researching and presenting this art outside the Western mainstream.

Legendary exhibition “Les Magiciens de la Terre” in Paris

His efforts began in 1986 with the groundbreaking exhibition “Magiciens de la Terre” .

From May 18 to August 14, 1989, the exhibition “Magiciens de la terre” at the Centre Pompidou and the Grande Halle de la Villette captivated both the public and critics from the museum and art world. At a time when contemporary art was mainly confined to Europe and North America, curator Jean-Hubert Martin invited artists from every continent, discovered during years of fieldwork.

These artists represent practices deeply rooted in their ancestors' cultures, resistant to postcolonialism, fighting against totalitarianism, and above all, open to increasing globalization. They encountered curious people, including some Western artists who were well integrated into established networks but sought intercultural dialogue.

Together they created works full of unique energy and impressive impact, giving rise to these “invisible” new artists. The pioneering “Magicians of the Earth” was considered groundbreaking.

At a time of emerging globalization, the exhibition sparked controversies that were both enduring and fruitful, inspiring and causing disappointment. It influenced many future exhibitions and marked a significant turning point in art history. (Source: Excerpt from the Centre Pompidou exhibition website).

Through numerous group and solo exhibitions at renowned institutions worldwide, he has made African artists accessible to a broad international audience. With “Africa Hoy,” he presented his collection for the first time in a successful traveling exhibition.

Jean Pigozzo , an American entrepreneur and art lover, now owns one of the largest collections of contemporary African art, curated by Magnin.

The role of the auction house Sotheby's

Over the last 15 years, the market for modern African art has gained significant importance, which is also reflected in auctions at Sotheby's.

A groundbreaking auction at Sotheby’s marked the first successful sale of contemporary and modern art from Africa. With 10 impressive works by 60 African artists, bidders made a significant statement on the global art market.

Particularly noteworthy were the record-breaking sales prices, including a fascinating sculpture made of bottle caps, lids, and copper wire by Ghanaian artist El Anatsui , which changed hands for around €800,000. Another surprise was the sculpture “Crash Willy” by British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare , which, at €244,000, far exceeded expectations. Auctions like this one at Sotheby's play a crucial role in drawing public attention to talented African artists.

Sotheby's recently presented an auction of modern and contemporary African art on March 21, 2024, at its New Bond St Galleries in London. From groundbreaking works by pioneering masters to exciting pieces by emerging talents, this auction showcases the vibrant narratives and diverse expressions of creativity from artists across Africa. Highlights included masterpieces by Alexis Preller, Irma Stern, Nicholas Hlobo, Amoako Boafo, Ben Enwonwu, Ouattara Watts, Bodys Isek Kingelez, Mohamed Melehi, and Sydney Kumalo .

The unique voice of contemporary African artists is now an integral part of the global art landscape, inspiring art lovers worldwide with its power and expressiveness. African contemporary art has arrived on the global art scene.

Modern Art in Europe

The move to Europe reveals a different facet of the art scene. Here, where Impressionism took root, artists are now experimenting with digital media and interactive installations that directly involve the viewer in the artwork.

During the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution not only brought about technological advances on the old continent, but also significantly influenced the art world in Europe.

New artistic styles emerged, reflecting the diversity and creativity of the era: from idealized Romanticism to light-filled Impressionism and sensual Art Nouveau. These movements shaped an entire era and culminated in the intense exchange between art and contemporary events.

The 20th century in Europe was characterized by political upheavals, social changes, and cultural diversity. This turbulent period was also reflected in art, which increasingly broke away from traditional norms and explored new paths. Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstraction were expressions of these epochal changes that revolutionized the art scene.

The innovative works of outstanding artists such as Van Gogh , Picasso , and Dalí embody the complexity and multifaceted nature of our modern world. Through their genius and artistic vision, they not only expanded the boundaries of art but also gained profound insights into the nature of humanity and its relationship to the world. The legacy of these artists continues to inspire new ways of thinking and new perspectives on our society and our times.

Rick Steves , America's most respected expert on European travel, writes European travel guides and hosts travel shows on public television and radio. In the following video, he takes us on a tour of Europe's artistic modernism:

Among the most famous European artists of our time are the following renowned names:

  • Banksy (Great Britain)
  • Isa Genzken (Germany)
  • Sean Scully (Ireland)
  • Neo Rauch (Germany)
  • Pierre Huyghe (France)
  • Chris Ofili (Great Britain)
  • Tracey Emin (Great Britain)
  • Andy Goldsworthy (Great Britain)
  • Antony Gormley (Great Britain)
  • Rudolf Stingel (Italy)
  • Sterling Ruby (Germany)
  • Albert Oehlen (Germany)
  • Thomas Schütte (Germany)
  • Thomas Ruff (Germany)
  • Hito Steyerl (Germany)
  • Martin Kippenberger (Germany)
  • Olafur Eliasson (Denmark)
  • Luc Tuymans (Belgium)
  • Marlene Dumas (Netherlands)
  • Anselm Kiefer (Germany)
  • Wolfgang Tillmans (Germany)
  • Gerhard Richter (Germany)
  • Damien Hirst (Great Britain)
  • Peter Doig (Great Britain)
  • Andreas Gursky (Germany)

The discerning reader will quickly notice that the majority of representatives on this list come from the two nations of Great Britain and Germany.

Asian art

In Asia , with its deep roots in millennia-old traditions, classical techniques blend with contemporary themes, resulting in a unique fusion. The art here often reflects a profound exploration of the balance between nature and technology.

Examining the contemporary art scene in Central, East, and Southeast Asia since the 1980s offers a fascinating glimpse into a diverse and vibrant creative landscape. Despite the global connections forged through biennials, fairs, and museums, Asia remains a region that cherishes both traditional practices and innovative approaches.

The turbulent economic developments of recent decades have left a profound mark on artists' works, manifesting themselves in an impressive diversity of styles. This ranges from the political pop art of the 1990s in China and Takashi Murakami's highly commercial art to the monumental installations of Indian artist Subodh Gupta , who transforms everyday objects in striking ways.

Similarly, direct political statements and performance art emerged as significant trends of the last two decades. A prime example of this is undoubtedly the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei , who has gained international recognition for his committed political activism.

Sun Xun is undoubtedly one of China's most talented and ambitious young artists. His artistic expression encompasses a wide range of media, from drawings and traditional ink paintings to woodblock prints, which he transforms into impressive black and white animations using innovative technologies.

Born in Fuxin in 1980, the artist often engages in a critical examination of Chinese history in his work. In 2006, he founded his renowned animation studio, Pi, which consistently produces high-quality works. Within just under a decade, Sun Xun has successfully held over 30 solo exhibitions, including prominent exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery in London and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.

Furthermore, his films have been impressively screened at over 150 international film festivals, including outstanding events such as the 8th Seoul International Film Festival and the 25th Torino Film Festival.

Overall, the contemporary art scene in Asia appears to be dynamic, innovative, and deeply rooted in its culture.

South American art scene is on the rise

The art scene in North and South America is characterized by its diversity and social commentary. Artists use their platform to address political and social issues, making their works incredibly relevant and moving.

This year, Adriano Pedrosa (born 1965 in Brazil) takes center stage as the first Latin American curator of the Venice Biennale, for its prestigious 60th edition. Following the successful tenure of Cecilia Alemani, Pedrosa takes over the reins and promises a captivating fusion of Latin American energy and global artistic excellence.

This historic appointment makes Pedrosa not only the pioneering Latin American curator of the Venice Biennale's International Art Exhibition, but also the first director from the Southern Hemisphere. The exhibition, running from April 20 to November 24, 2024 (with a pre-opening extravaganza from April 17 to 19), promises an unparalleled and exciting journey of discovery into contemporary art under the vibrant banner of Latin American creativity .

In Latin America, artists are gaining global recognition, while a growing community of Latin American art collectors is emerging to support artists both in the region and abroad.

Mexico City is considered a leading force in this movement and has established itself as a center for contemporary Latin American art. The city's annual ZonaMaco art fair has become a significant meeting place where artists from all over Latin America can exhibit and connect with collectors and renowned dealers from art metropolises such as London, New York, Paris, and Los Angeles.

Thanks to its favorable location, pleasant climate, excellent gastronomy , and abundance of talented artists, Mexico City has effortlessly captured the attention of the global art world. It has developed into an international center that fosters dialogue and strengthens the vibrant and diverse landscape of contemporary Latin American art.

Latin America's art scene impresses with its vibrant diversity and creative energy. Famous 20th-century artists like Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera have had a lasting impact on the art world. They attracted important figures of the Parisian Surrealist movement, such as André Breton, to Mexico.

In addition, artists such as Fernando Botero from Colombia, Wilfredo Lam from Cuba, and Tarsila do Amaral from Brazil should be mentioned. The authenticity and depth of their works are appreciated worldwide and offer a fascinating perspective on their influence on Western art movements.

To successfully navigate the ever-expanding contemporary art market in 2024, it is crucial, The Nomad Salon Jose Campos (born 1986, El Salvador), also known as Studio Lenca, and Wynnie Mynerva (born 1992, Peru).

Today, paintings over 100 cm by these two rising stars of the South American art scene exceed the €10,000 mark and are reserved for discerning collectors. Nevertheless, both artists are still at an early stage in their careers and offer a promising glimpse into their future development and the increasing value of their works.

Similar to this duo, many Latin American artists demonstrate considerable talent, yet their art remains affordable (under $10,000). These price points offer discerning collectors a unique opportunity to engage with these emerging talents before wider recognition increases their work and its value.

Another outstanding Mexican artist is Patricia Ortiz . As an art collector, you should also keep the following names in mind:

  • Hiram Constantino
  • Horacio Quiroz
  • Rocío Sáenz
  • Rocio Navarro
  • Ana Blumenkron
  • Andrea Villalón
  • Tania Baca Alvarado
  • Adriana Jaros
  • Stefania Tejada
  • Alexa Torre

Diverse styles across all continents – art can be so diverse

From abstraction to realism

The landscape of contemporary art is rich and diverse, ranging from the impulsive freedom of Abstract Expressionism to the breathtaking accuracy of Hyperrealism .

In abstract expressionism, emotions and thoughts find their expression in powerful brushstrokes and vivid explosions of color, as in the works of Jackson Pollock , where the paint is dripped or flung directly onto the canvas to create a chaotic but captivating image.

The clarity of hyperrealism

In direct contrast to this is hyperrealism , which blurs the lines between art and reality. Artists like Chuck Close create works that are so detailed and lifelike that they appear almost photorealistic. This art form challenges viewers to look more closely at reality and to appreciate the technique and patience that go into each work.

Pop Art and the Mass Media

Alongside these two extremes, numerous other styles flourished, showcasing the diverse possibilities of artistic expression. These ranged from the serene beauty of minimalist artworks, which focus on simplicity and purity of form, to Pop Art, which, as Andy Warhol did .

Ultimately, it all comes down to personal taste

Developing a personal taste in art is a journey as individual as the viewer themselves. Marcel Duchamp , a pioneer of conceptual art, aptly observed:

It is the viewer who creates the artwork

This underscores the role of personal perception in the appreciation of art. Everyone brings their own experiences, preferences, and emotions to the table, which shape their view of artworks.

Exploring different art styles and periods helps to discover preferences and understand what resonates with you. Vincent van Gogh once said:

What would life be if we didn't have the courage to take risks?

These words also apply to art. Experimenting with different genres and daring to explore unusual pieces can lead to surprising discoveries.

The assumption that art has to be expensive is a widespread misconception. In reality, there are numerous ways to find affordable art, whether in local galleries, at craft markets, or via online platforms that offer prints of original works.

As Gerhard Richter put it:

Art is the highest good, art is irreplaceable, art is everywhere
