How is Urban Art characterized?

Originally created as graffiti on New York subway cars and on the streets, Urban Art has developed into a true phenomenon that achieves amazing record prices in auctions. Formerly illegal art has developed into a respected and recognized movement that motivates both collectors and artists around the world.

Due to a vibrating mix of street culture and modern art, Street Art has developed into a significant cultural form of expression. The rebellious works of these artists represent various aspects of big city life. They speak their own language, which often includes social criticism.

The astonishing change from subversive graffiti to high -priced urban art brilliantly shows the acceptance and attractiveness of this original art form in the modern cultural landscape.

Where Street-Art started

Street Art has their roots in the late 1960s and early 1970s when artistic movements from the graffiti scene developed in cities such as New York and Philadelphia. Early works, which often consisted of lettering and tags, were considered an expression of personality, identity and desire for freedom of the artists as well as an uprising against socio -economic constraints.

With artists such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, the well-known "graffiti flower" of the 1980s contributed to the focus of public attention and appreciation.

Evolution to Urban Art in the 21st Century

The 21st century has experienced a revolutionary development in the art world that extends beyond traditional materials such as paper, cardboard and canvas on streets, sidewalks, subways and building facades. The inspiring art of graffiti embodies movement, freedom and spontaneity and enjoys a steadily growing fan base.

Artists like Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mr. Brainwash , Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf , Banksy, Invader and STIK are particularly in demand today.

Since Shepard Fairey's “Hope” poster from 2008 and the groundbreaking exhibition “Art in the Streets” in the Moca Museum in Los Angeles in 2011 under the direction of Jeffrey Deits, Roger Gastman and Aaron Rose, the urban art form has made a real sentence forward.

The exhibition pursued the development of graffiti and street art from the 1970s to today's global movement and concentrated on cities such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London and Sao Paulo, in which a unique visual language has developed. Paintings, mixed media sculptures and interactive installations of 50 outstanding artists were shown.

Street Art is now a global phenomenon in which artists leave their traces in urban rooms worldwide. Regional and cultural influences enrich the movement, promote cultural exchange and appreciation.

Events such as Art Basel Miami Beach and the Upfest in Bristol present the talent of young, wild artists from the scene and consolidate the importance of street art in the contemporary art scene.

of Urban Art when it has made the original street art into the exhibition rooms of galleries and museums and takes part in art auctions .

Urban Art achieves record prices for auctions and dream returns for collectors

Urban Art achieves record prices for auctions and dream returns for collectors

On October 14, 2021, the artwork "Love Is In The Bin" from Banksy achieved the impressive amount of 21.8 million euros at an auction. As early as 2018, the work made headlines when it was destroyed by Sotheby's itself during the auction. However, this incident has by no means reduced the value of the artwork, but rather confirmed an exponential increase in its price.

Within just three years, the price of the work of 1.2 million euros has increased to 18 times. Banksy stands out due to its unique form of communication and its price reaches unprecedented heights. These figures illustrate the rise of urban art in the art trade since the 2000s.

The most expensive street art work of all time is the painting "Untitled" by Jean-Michel Basquiat from 1982. In 2017, it was auctioned at Sotheby's in New York for over $ 110 million.

Auction houses took up the urban phenomenon rapidly and quickly recognized the potential of the movement. In France, auction houses such as Tajan, Leclère and Digard have joined this trend and have increased the number of special auctions since 2006.

However, the figurehead of this phenomenon is undoubtedly artcurial , a real giant that has been offering special auctions annually for over 100 years. The auction house brings together the biggest names of the contemporary urban scene for 15 years. Overall, large sales were achieved on French soil. The 985,000 euros for Kaws' sculpture "Final Days" in 2019 and the 492,600 euros for Invader's "Rubik Space" in 2020. Support this statement.

Street Art shows itself as a lucrative investment field. Works of leading artists experience constant increases in value and reach record prices at auctions. Collectors like the Mugrabi family in New York are among the collectors with the greatest appetite for this art movement. Works by Kenny Scharf or Basquiat in particular have been taken with you.

Since its debut, Urban Art has been increasing increasing popularity in terms of supply and on demand. New market developments, especially in Hong Kong, have started to expand the traditionally strong European and American markets and to further strengthen this trend.

The sales figures show further north. In view of the fact that Banksy is currently the only living street artist who has achieved more than a million when selling his works of art, it would not be surprising if other artists such as Kaws, Invader or Barry McGee rose to the exclusive club of the multi-million doors.

Techniques and styles

The styles of Street Art are as diverse as the artists themselves:

  • Graffiti : This technique, often designed with spray cans, forms the root of Street Art. Simple tags or stylized letters develop into complex color explosions and shapes.
  • Stencils : Works sprayed with stencils enable precise and repeatable designs. Banksy, one of the best -known artists in the street scene, masterfully uses this method.
  • Muralism : These monumental wall paintings can cover entire buildings and often represent historical or political issues. Artists like Diego Rivera have made this technique popular.
  • Paste-ups and stickers : Pre-produced pieces of paper or stickers are glued to surfaces and offer a quick and effective way of spreading visual messages.
  • Installations : 3D elements made of various materials are integrated into public space and create interactive experiences.

FAQ on the subject of street art

How do street art and graffiti differ?

Graffiti are sometimes used as an illegal form of self -portrayal, with the focus on labeling and tags. In contrast, Street Art is often legally produced today and with artistic consciousness and includes a broader spectrum of art starts such as stencils (stencils), murals (murals) and installations.

Is urban and street species the same?

Urban Art, sometimes also called Street Art, was mainly created in public space. However, the urban art includes artistic works that are inspired by urban culture and are exhibited in galleries and museums and can be purchased on the art market for collectors.

Why is street art important?

Urban art offers an easily accessible arena for the discussion of critical political, social and cultural topics. It democratizes art by making it accessible to a wide audience and in most cases strengthens the voices of social movements and marginalized groups.

Is Street Art illegal?

In fact, there are legal locations in numerous cities for this type of art as well as festivals and projects to which artists are officially invited to create and/or issue their works.

How permanent is Street Art?

Road art is transient because it is exhibited outside and is therefore exposed to human influences and the weather. However, this underlines its unique attraction and influence.

Road art has the potential to make our cities more lively, intellectual and more beautiful by combining artistic expression with an urban context. She invites us to be open to the different stories and messages that surround us and to see the world with new eyes.

Where do I get access to urban art?

There are various ways to acquire an urban art plant. Many customers call before buying to answer any questions. Therefore, the usual way is to contact the artist directly.

Alternatively, you can purchase your selected image in the artist's online shop or the representative gallery (see external link in the respective artwork in our online gallery).

Using the filter function, you can identify the right work of art from the numerous categories. Alternatively, use the keyword search to find your favorite picture quickly.

I found an urban art image, but the format does not fit.

Many artists who issue us also enable an individual oil picture to be made in the size you want (keyword: order work ). It is best to contact the artist directly by message or phone call to discuss the details.

Either can use existing works or a street art work of art can be created according to your taste.

Is the work of art with frame delivered?

Your picture should be able to hang directly on the wall. Ideally, your work of art is delivered. In the case of international deliveries, a role is often used to avoid high transport costs.

You can find out more details about the description or the external link in the works of art. If you do not find any information about this, we recommend that you contact the artist or seller directly.

How is the painting delivered?

The artist or gallery is responsible for shipping. In our experience, sending a picture depends on its size and possibly also on the frame. If it is a large or sensitive picture, it is often carefully packed in a special box. This box is made of stable plastic and is lined with foam on the inside to ensure optimal protection.

For small works of art, galleries often use local freight forwarders for shipping. In individual cases, inquire with the artist or his gallery. With most of the galleries and shops through which our artists sell, you can trust that all packages are insured and will therefore arrive safely and undamaged.

Is there a (free) return option?

As a rule, galleries (and often also artists) offer the possibility of a free return/return if you do not like. The return period can be 14 days to a whole year. If in doubt, inquire before buying the provider, the gallery or the artist.
