Giovanni da Bologna, known as Giambologna, was an important artist of the transition period between Renaissance and Baroque and master student of Michelangelos. His art unites local and antique influences, with large bronze and marble sculptures as well as filigree statuettes represent central elements of his work. After completing his training at Jacques Dubroeucq in Mons, he settled in Florence and became the court sculptor of the Medici. Giambolognas Werke were desired throughout Europe, which gave him a unique status. He received numerous honors, including the Order of Christ from the Pope and the survey to the nobility by the emperor. Until his death in 1608, he tirelessly served the Medici family in Florence.
