Johann Gottfried Schadow was the most important German sculptor of the Napoleonic era. Trained in the royal workshop, he became head of the court sculpture workshop and "Director of all Sculptures" in 1788. Schadow's work increasingly incorporated realistic, national, and individual elements alongside the classical ideal. His classically idealized and lifelike style became a guiding principle for the 19th century.
