Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) was an Italian painter, printmaker, and sculptor who focused primarily on portraits and nudes. His works are characterized by elongated, stylized forms that evoke a melancholic and lyrical mood. The delicate hues lend volume and expression to the female bodies. From 1909 onward, African sculptures influenced his style, but Modigliani remained entirely separate from the avant-garde movements of his time, drawing inspiration only from Fauvism and Cubism. Together with Marc Chagall and Chaim Soutine, he developed a unique artistic approach that emphasized the psychological dimension. With his portraits, Modigliani aimed to vividly portray the character of his models—often friends from Parisian intellectual circles. The use of warm ochre and yellow tones, as well as fresco-like applications of color, is an homage to Florentine and Sienese painting. His works combine grace and melancholy into a poignant sensitivity. Tragically, Modigliani suffered from health problems as well as alcohol and drug addiction, which led to his early death at only 35 years old.
