Sculpture "Pietà" (1489-99), reduction in art marble
At just 23 years old, Michelangelo created one of his most poignant works with the sculptural group of the Virgin and Child—the only sculpture he ever signed. Mary's timelessly youthful face expresses a restrained pain, which is also evident in the surrendering gesture of her left hand. Unlike the artists who created this motif before him, Michelangelo does not emphasize pain as a prerequisite for redemption, but rather depicts divine beauty as the result of redemption.
