Sculpture "Pietà" (1489-99), reduction in art marble

At just 23 years old, Michelangelo created one of his most poignant works with the sculptural group of the Virgin and Child—the only sculpture he ever signed. Mary's timelessly youthful face expresses a restrained pain, which is also evident in the surrendering gesture of her left hand. Unlike the artists who created this motif before him, Michelangelo does not emphasize pain as a prerequisite for redemption, but rather depicts divine beauty as the result of redemption.

Original: St. Peter's Basilica, Rome.

Reduction. Polymeres Museum replica, cast by hand. Format 23 x 29 x 14 cm (b/h/t).

Pain and despair but also hope, Michelangelo described in his prehistory of humanity: the Sistine chapel in the Vatican. When he created these vaults between 1508 and 1512, the main representative of the High Renaissance and pioneer of mannerism as a sculptor and painter already played a central role in Italy's artistic and intellectual life. Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in 1475 in the Tuscan Caprese. He received his training as a painter from Domenico Ghirlandaio, which of the sculptor may be with Bertoldo di Giovannis, whereby the study of antiquity was of great influence. From 1496 to 1501 Michelangelo worked in Rome, where the "Pietà" was created for St. Peter's Basilica. By 1504 he then worked in Florence on the monumental statue of "David", which is still the close connection to antiquity. The following sculptures characterize the transition to mannerism through violent moments of movement.
