The ginkgo's unique, two-lobed leaf, and the fact that there are male and female trees, have made it a symbol of harmony and partnership for thousands of years. According to Asian philosophy, the ginkgo's slender, upright growth habit represents Yang, equated with activity and vitality, while the fan-like shape of its leaves represents Yin, or gentleness and softness.
