Katsushika Hokusai was born in Edo in 1760, today's Tokyo, and grew up in modest conditions. As a child, he showed an extraordinary talent for drawing. At the age of 14 he started an apprenticeship with a wood carver before turning to Ukiyo-e art-the "pictures of the flowing world" that represented everyday life and the amusements of the Japanese city population. In the course of his remarkably long life, Hokusai changed his stage name more than 30 times. Each new name marked an artistic development phase and mirrors Te his constant search for perfection. "At the age of 73 I understood something of the true nature of animals, birds, insects and fish", he is said to have said. "At the age of 100 I will be a truly great artist."
