190 oil paintings and 108 drawings – during his stay in Arles, which lasted just over a year from February 21, 1888, to May 3, 1889, Vincent van Gogh worked himself into a veritable creative frenzy. At the same time, a striking brightening of his palette is quite literally noticeable: In numerous letters, he requested chrome yellow, vermillion, Prussian blue, and emerald green from his brother Theo, who supported him unwaveringly until his death, and subsequently used these colors extensively. A shining example is "Starry Night over the Rhône," the description of which we will leave to the great painter (and, in his letters, often no less great prose writer) himself: "... a study of the Rhône, of the illuminated city reflected in the blue river. Above, the starry sky—with the Big Dipper—sparkling pink and green against the cobalt blue expanse of the sky, while the city lights and their glaring reflections are reddish-gold and bronze-green." (Letter to Eugène Bloch)
