Max Pechstein (1881-1955) is one of the most outstanding representatives of German Expressionism. In 1906 he joined the "Die Brücke" artist group, which was founded by Kirchner and others. In addition to his painting, he created over 850 works in graphics, including woodcuts, lithographs and etchings. The Baltic Sea coast became a place of inspiration for him; His trips to Nidden in particular at the Curonian Spit from 1909 shaped his work. But the political changes according to the Versailles contracts made this region inaccessible to him. In search of a retreat, Pechstein finally found a new creative port in Leba, which he visited regularly in summer.
