Marc Chagall is considered one of the most important masters of the 20th century and impressed with his unique, mythical stories. His works are strongly shaped by his religious childhood, ancient myths and nostalgic memories. Chagall's painting is a poetic expression of a "happy vision" that is opposed to everyday life. Born in Witebsk in 1887, Chagall moved to Saint Petersburg at the age of 20, where he was inspired by European modernism. After escaping to the United States in 1941 and the loss of his wife, he found inspiration from his personal life again in his pictures. In the late 1940s, Chagall returned to Paris and noticed with his colorful works, which embodied the ideal image of an apolitical world. His cycle "Daphnis and Chloé" mirrors t resisted both personal and creative changes and is considered a masterpiece of his work. In addition to lithographs and book illustrations, Chagall also devoted himself to monumental works of art, including glass paintings for churches and ceiling paintings for opera houses worldwide. Even in old age, he worked tirelessly on new projects until his end of life, but rarely spoke about his own art.
