Munch produced a total of four versions of "The Scream" in different techniques and sizes: two in tempera on cardboard (from 1893 and 1910) and two in pastel on wood (1893 and 1895), with dimensions ranging from 74 x 56 cm to 91 x 73.5 cm; several smaller lithographs also exist. The 1895 version fetched nearly $120 million at auction in 2012, making it one of the most expensive paintings ever sold. Several theories exist regarding the origin of "The Scream." One suggests that Munch visited an exhibition of Inca mummies with Paul Gauguin in 1889, which inspired him; another proposes that the painting depicts the reddish sky caused by the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in 1883.
