Gerhard Richter was born in Dresden in 1932. Before the Berlin Wall was built, he left his hometown and continued his art studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. At a time when abstract art prevailed, his photo -realistic painting of motifs from the family album caused a sensation. Richter is known for always looking for new expressions and has used various styles and media such as painting, sculpture, photography and performance. Despite his fame, he stays true to himself and prefers to let his art speak for himself. At an auction, his painting “Candle” from the 1980s achieved a high price and symbolizes the silent protest of the GDR citizens against the socialist regime.
