Gerhard Richter, born in Dresden in 1932, left his hometown in front of the wall building and continued his art studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. His photo -realistic painting of motifs from the family album caused a stir at a time when abstract art dominated. Richter is known for always looking around for new expressions and has used various styles and media such as painting, sculpture, photography and performance. Despite his fame, he stays true to himself and prefers to let his art speak. His painting “Candle” from the 1980s achieved a high price at an auction and symbolizes the silent protest of the GDR citizens against the socialist regime.
