The significance of the painting had already been noticed by van Gogh's brother and supporter, Theo. When the painter sent it to him along with other paintings, Theo expressed his enthusiasm in a letter dated June 16, 1889: "In all of them there is a power of color that you have not yet achieved," he commented, and informed his brother that "The Red Vineyard" had already found a place in his home.
