Andy Warhol's kitten “Sam” comes from a portfolio of hand-colored lithographs that Warhol compiled in the 1950s: “25 Cats Named Sam and One Blue Pussy”.

Warhol and his mother, who lived together for a long time, are said to have owned a large number of cats and named almost all of them "Sam". Warhol published the portfolio as a small artist's book in 1954, self-published.
