About Ernst Barlach (1870-1938), sculptor, writer and draftsman: Ernst Barlach - born on January 2, 1870 in the Holstein Wedel, died on October 24, 1938 in Rostock - takes on an outstanding special position within German Expressionism. As a graphic artist, draftsman, writer and especially as a sculptor, Barlach created milestones in art history: Barlach's plastic images are looking for the borderline experience and their presentation and this is exactly what lies its special effect. They are works of a multi -layered sense of meaning with which he put the essence of man in the foreground and what is above that of the ego and the things of the world. The intention of Barlach's intention is rooted in depth, inside. Characterized by war and severe living conditions, he experiences suffering and happiness from here. And people are always at the center of his work: Ecce Homo. "However, I desire nothing more than bad and quite an artist. It is my belief that what is not to be expressed through the work can pass through forms in the possession of someone else. Again and again my lust and urge to create the problems of life and the other big mountains in the spiritual area." (Ernst Barlach) Ernst Barlach became an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1925. In 1933 he was appointed knight of the peace class of the order "Pour Le Mérite". In 1937 the National Socialists removed his works as "degenerate art" from public collections and squares. Ernst Barlach died in Rostock on October 24, 1938. Today, the works of Ernst Barlach are an integral part of the leading museums and collections and - if available - achieve record amounts at auctions. "The singing man" became the best known plastic Ernst Barlach, an icon of modernity. He adorns illustrated books and posters worldwide, the original edition is an integral part of the collections of the world's large museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.
