A member of "Die Brücke" and the "Berlin Secession," co-founder and president of the "New Secession," and from 1923 also of the Prussian Academy of Arts and a professor, Max Pechstein's rise was undeniable. Then came the loss of his professorship in 1933, his expulsion from the Academy in 1937, the condemnation of his work as "degenerate art," financial hardship, and the destruction of many of his works by the war. Only in his later years after 1945 did he experience renewed recognition. Max Pechstein truly led a turbulent artistic life. But there was one constant, a safe haven, so to speak, amidst all this turmoil: For more than two decades, from 1921 to 1945, he managed to spend his summers painting in Western Pomerania. We owe many of his most beautiful landscapes to these stays, such as his "Port of Leba," which he painted during his second visit and which was to be followed by numerous others.
