For Kandinsky, painting was a visualization of music and soundscapes: "Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the soundboard with many strings. The artist is the virtuoso who, with his touch, makes the soul vibrate..." 1866-1944, abstract expressionist, co-founder of the artists' group "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider). Kandinsky, like no other, wrote the "alphabet of 20th-century art." In his abstract painting, he brought the primal power of color and composition to bear without the distraction of depicting objects. In his view, the mystery of LIFE could only be grasped and represented through the abstract interplay of color and graphic form.
