William Turner (1775-1851) was an outstanding English oil and watercolor painter who specialized in landscapes, historical pictures and seasons. At a young age he was characterized by technical perfection and became a member of the Royal Academy. His experimental approach and dealing with Goethe's color theory led to a decisive change in his style. Turner bravely cried the doors to tradition by devoting himself intensively to the effects of light and movement. Despite violent criticism for his innovative painting, his precise understanding of nature and the dynamic lighting laid the foundation for the impressionists and modern painting. Most of his works can be found in the Tate Gallery in London today.
