Roman art is primarily characterized by the fusion of Italic and Greek-Hellenistic elements. With the redesign of the Roman Forum by Augustus and the redesign of the Forum of Augustus, the significance of the old city centers changed. They became large, enclosed open spaces. Axial symmetry, centered on a podium temple, is characteristic of the period. Under the reign of Emperor Augustus, temples and theaters were built in the "eternal city." Their round, dynamic architectural forms increasingly departed from the linearity of their Greek models.
