Hard to imagine that Piet Mondrian's strict geometric compositions originated in picturesque, filigree landscape studies. At the age of 20, as a student of the art academy in Amsterdam, he felt close to Impressionism. In the neutral Netherlands, he was spared the turmoil of the First World War for a long time and was able to follow his inspiration and the theosophical studies. The first fauvist and neo -impressionist elements appeared in his pictures.

In Paris, which he visited for the first time in 1912, he took part in several "Salons of the Indépendant", where the cubism of a Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso influenced him. Mondrian, for example, reduced a tree to horizontal and vertical lines to black, orthogonal beams, and he filled the gaps with white and basic colors.
