Tree tenants, rooftop afforestation, urban greening, composting toilets, restoration of social values and natural cycles. A voice against environmental pollution, the dangers of nuclear energy, the defacement of nature and the destruction of our natural heritage, and for a zero-waste society. Hundertwasser had been involved with architecture since the 1950s. On the occasion of the inauguration of the Hundertwasser House in Vienna (1986), he said: "We are experiencing another turning point, where old and rigid values in architecture and urban planning are increasingly being questioned. The straight lines and uniformity of Bauhaus architecture are coming to an end, because they are insensitive, sterile, cold, heartless, aggressive, and unemotional. The era of absolute rationalism is drawing to a close. The new values are an increased quality of life, not a standard of living. A longing for romance, individuality, creativity—especially creativity—and a life in harmony with nature."
