Jugendstil was the German term for the art movement between 1890 and 1910. The name originated from the magazine "Jugend," published in Munich from 1896 onwards. Internationally, the style is also known as Art Nouveau (France), Modern Style (England), or Secession Style (Austria). Jugendstil spread throughout Europe, resulting in countless objects spanning painting, decorative arts, and architecture. A key tenet of Jugendstil was the artistic design of everyday objects, meaning that beauty and functionality were to be combined. The desired artistic unity could only be achieved through individually distinctive design, which made Jugendstil a precursor to Modernism. The essential characteristic of Jugendstil is linear, often asymmetrical ornamentation, whose inspiration is primarily found in nature and the plant world.
