Sculpture group “The Family” by Paul Wunderlich
The three slender, symmetrical bronze figures are arranged in a harmonious triad, which nevertheless does not obscure the individual characteristics of each sculpture. All three figures in the ensemble resemble one another, yet they are clearly distinguishable in character.
An ensemble of three bronzes, patinated in different shades, some polished. Cast using the lost-wax process. Edition of 99, numbered and signed.
Large sculpture: Height 57 cm. Weight 4.3 kg.
Medium-sized sculpture: Height 41 cm. Weight 2.2 kg.
Small sculpture: Height 27.5 cm. Weight 1.6 kg.

Wunderlich created a subtle form: a gracefully tailored torso flows into a flattering spherical element and continues into a long, fitted dress. The large figure has a reseda-green patina and a finely textured surface. The middle figure has a reddish-brown patina and is articulated by regularly spaced lines. The youngest member of the family wears a smooth garment with a golden sheen. Paul Wunderlich, like few other artists of our time, was one of the truly style-defining artists of modernism. As late as 1960, the Hamburg public prosecutor's office confiscated his works as "offensive." Three years later, the still-young Paul Wunderlich was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts.
