Mark Rothko (1903-1970), alongside Jackson Pollock, is the second major representative of American Abstract Expressionism. His large-format works, characterized by juxtaposed and superimposed monochrome color fields, aim for precisely calculated effects of light and space, for an almost meditative interaction between image and viewer. Rothko also accepted the offer to develop a concept for an interfaith prayer space (the "Rothko Chapel" in Houston). A Rothko defines a space and gives it a character—art can do no more than that.
