1. Understanding the risks of sunlight

Before considering protective measures , you should be aware of the risks sunlight poses to your paintings. Constant exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause fading, discoloration, and even the deterioration of artworks.

The pigments used in paintings are susceptible to damage, especially in older works of art that may have been made from organic materials.

2. Setting up and displaying

One of the most important steps to protecting your paintings is to position and display them strategically in your home or art gallery. Avoid placing artwork in direct sunlight or near windows where it will be exposed to intense light for extended periods.

Instead, choose areas with diffuse or indirect light , e.g., on walls away from windows, or in rooms with controlled lighting.

3. Use of UV-protective glass or acrylic glass

Investing in UV-protective glass or acrylic glass is an effective way to protect your artwork from harmful sunlight. These materials contain a protective layer that filters out most UV rays, significantly reducing the risk of damage to your pieces.

When choosing UV-protective glass or acrylic, pay attention to high quality and opt for anti-reflective versions to improve visibility.

4. Window coverings

Windows are a frequent entry point for sunlight, which is why it's important to implement appropriate window treatments. Consider installing blinds, curtains, or shades that can be drawn during peak sunlight hours.

These measures not only protect your paintings, but also help regulate the room temperature, thus preventing excessive heat that could damage the artworks.

5. Rotating the artworks

To reduce the effects of sunlight on your paintings, you should change the displayed artworks at regular intervals.

Rotating your collection will ensure that each piece is evenly exposed to light and prevent certain paintings from fading or discoloring due to prolonged sun exposure.

6. Control of humidity and temperature

Besides sunlight, fluctuations in humidity and temperature can also negatively affect your paintings. High humidity can lead to mold growth, while extreme temperatures can cause cracks or warping in the paint.

Ensure a stable environment by using a dehumidifier and keeping the room temperature within a suitable range to guarantee the longevity of your artwork.

7. Framing and passe-partout

Proper framing and matting can provide additional protection for your paintings. Choose frames made of materials resistant to sunlight, such as the previously mentioned UV-protective glass or acrylic.

Furthermore, acid-free passe-partouts can prevent chemicals from penetrating the artwork and ensure its longevity.

8. Regular cleaning and maintenance

Regular cleaning and care of your paintings is essential for their preservation. Dust and dirt can accumulate over time and impair the clarity and vibrancy of the artwork.

Use a soft brush or microfiber cloth to remove dust from the surface, and avoid using harsh cleaning agents that could damage the paint layers.

As a dedicated art lover, protecting your paintings from sunlight during the summer is crucial for preserving their beauty and value. By taking the necessary sun protection measures, you can ensure that your artworks remain vibrant and valuable for years to come.

Therefore, take the necessary measures to protect your paintings and continue to enjoy their artistic splendor!
