Neighborhood Day: Why we are opening our studio and what creativity has to do with it

Are you familiar with Neighborhood Day? I have to admit, I hadn't heard of it myself until recently. That's why the initiative behind it touched me so deeply. It reminds us how valuable genuine encounters right on our doorstep can be. And that's precisely why I want to share this with you today and also tell you why our studio and a creative activity are part of this special day.
What is Neighborhood Day?
Neighborhood Day is an initiative of the nebenan.de Foundation and will take place for the ninth time May 29, 2026. "Celebrating Neighborhood. Experiencing Diversity," all neighbors are encouraged and invited to become active in their own neighborhoods on this nationwide day of action and to organize small and large events and festivals.

Whether it's a neighborhood festival, cooking together, creative painting and crafting events, upcycling workshops, litter collection tours, or planting campaigns – every activity counts and shows how vibrant, special, and diverse our neighborhood is.
The main goal is to foster exchange between neighbors – regardless of age, origin, or circumstances – and to promote a stronger sense of community. Together, this combats loneliness and strengthens social cohesion.
This immediately thrilled us! We're in and look forward to celebrating Neighborhood Day with you here at Atelier D&K – creatively, colorfully, and vibrantly!
How can I participate in Neighborhood Day?
The great thing about a neighborhood is that each of us has neighbors around us. This means everyone can participate in Neighborhood Day – whether private individuals, local businesses, social institutions, clubs, daycare centers, schools, libraries, or municipalities.
If you want to participate in the promotion, there are three different options:
Start your own campaign
Simply think about what you can do and offer yourself. The Day of the Neighborhood thrives on diversity, openness, encounters, and accessibility – in short, anything that quickly connects people without seeming overly organized.
As a private individual , you could, for example, offer coffee and cake at your doorstep, invite neighbors to a picnic in your garden or courtyard, organize a yard sale, host a games afternoon, or even hold creative craft events. These free coloring cards .
for local businesses to offer insights into their operations. Showcase what makes you unique and connect with your neighborhood. What sets you apart? What do you want to be known for? For example, open your shop for an open house, give a behind-the-scenes look, offer small workshops, provide neighborhood discounts, or create a "get to know us" wall for your neighbors.
You can then officially register your event on the website for the day of action , so that others can also find out about it.
Support other actions
Sometimes, in everyday life, we simply lack the time or energy to organize our own events, and that's perfectly fine. It's just as valuable to support existing initiatives in the neighborhood with a little time, helping hands, networking, or small donations.
This is how community often develops quite naturally – by getting involved wherever it's needed.
Discover events near you
You haven't planned an event yourself, but would like to participate in Neighborhood Day as a visitor? The map of events makes it easy to find activities near you. A great opportunity to meet new people and connect with your neighbors.
And if you don't want to go alone, grab your favorite neighbors and go to the event together.
Why do we, as a studio, participate in Neighborhood Day?
It quickly became clear to my studio partner and me that we wanted to be part of this special day.
Why exactly? There are many small and large reasons that repeatedly show us how valuable creative encounters in the neighborhood are.

1. Creativity connects
Sure, there are times when you want to be alone. But being active and, above all, creative in a group is something truly special. You exchange ideas, laugh together, experiment together, and are inspired by one another. Often, this leads not only to new ideas but also to genuine encounters – brief conversations that linger and connections that extend beyond the moment.
Creativity opens up spaces where everyone can simply be themselves. And therein lies its special power: creating something together that connects people , brings lightness, and fosters a sense of togetherness.
2. The inner critic becomes quieter in community
When we're completely alone, our inner critic can quickly become loud. Thoughts like "I can't do this," "I'm not creative," or other doubts push their way to the forefront and often take up far too much space.
In a community, exactly that changes. Surrounded by others who are also trying things out, experimenting, laughing, "failing" (although that's not really a thing), and simply doing it, things suddenly become easier. The pressure drops, perfectionism fades into the background, and one's own expression can emerge again.
Being creative together opens up spaces where intuition becomes palpable again , there is no right or wrong, and the joy of doing finally takes center stage again.
3. Creativity is accessible to everyone
What do we love most about creativity? It belongs to all of us – regardless of experience, talent, or prior knowledge. It's not about making something "perfect," but about trying things out, experimenting with different colors, shapes, and materials, having fun, and discovering your own form of expression.
Especially on Neighborhood Day, which stands for diversity, vibrancy, inclusion, and togetherness, everyone is welcome to come to our D&K studio just as they are. It's about being there, trying things out, and creating something together.

4. Creative initiatives right on your doorstep can make a big difference
Almost two years ago, we moved our studio to Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel. We quickly sensed the strong desire in the neighborhood for creative opportunities. Workshop participants tell us how wonderful it is to have creative offerings right in their own district, without having to travel across the city. Since then, we've regularly opened our studio for workshops, free hands-on activities, and small events. Connecting with the neighborhood has a very special magic to it.
And that's precisely what drives us: not only to be creative ourselves, but also to share that space . To create a place that is colorful, vibrant, and open, where creativity finds its place in the everyday lives of our neighbors.
5. Why not?
Honestly, why not? If we don't participate in Neighborhood Day with our studio and creative offerings, it's just another day. But if we do participate, we all benefit – from inspiring conversations, new encounters, and a stronger sense of community in our neighborhood.
Because in the end, we lose nothing by committing ourselves to community and togetherness. On the contrary: it feels right to give something back – to the people who value and support us, our studio, and our work. And that, for us, is where the real value lies.
What you can expect at our studio on Neighborhood Day
On Neighborhood Day, we open our doors and invite everyone to our open studio and creative neighborhood gathering . A place where you can arrive, stay, and simply be.

Our visitors can
- Neighbors from Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel (and surrounding area) meet,
- abstract art by my studio partner Katharina as well as my intuitively painted works for your home,
- Enjoying a drink in early summer while taking in the atmosphere of a studio, as well as
- Get creative yourself.
For anyone who wants to try something new, there will be a small hands-on activity where mini works of art can be created and vases of various sizes and shapes can be painted – no prior knowledge required, but plenty of room for intuition and enjoyment of the process.
Furthermore, a small neighborhood gallery : many small works of art, created directly on site and then displayed in our shop window. In this way, something lasting grows beyond the day itself – colorful, vibrant, and full of diverse artistic styles from the neighborhood.
Are you creative yourself? Then go for it.
If you work artistically or creatively, Neighborhood Day is a wonderful opportunity to open your space and let people participate .
You don't need to plan anything elaborate – often it's the simple things that create a connection: a small interactive table, painting together, an open studio, or a creative exchange. Ideally, implement it in a way that feels right for you and doesn't add unnecessary planning burden. After all, it should bring joy not only to your guests but also to you while you're organizing it.
And if you're still lacking ideas: Feel free to check out our interactive campaign – a little inspiration is always welcome. 😉

Danila Kreitz is a marketing manager, freelance artist, and creative force from Hamburg who consistently follows her inner calling in her work. For her, creativity is not something that needs to be learned or perfected, but rather something deeply human that lies within us all.
She has found joy in creative activities since childhood. Today, she is less concerned with the finished product than with the moment when control is relinquished and genuine, free creation emerges.
In her studio in Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel, she creates intuitive, abstract works with flowing forms and organic structures. Her art is meant to touch people, transform spaces, and stir something within. At the same time, through workshops and creative formats, she opens up spaces where people can rediscover their own creativity – without pressure, without striving for perfection, but with curiosity, lightness, and trust in their own intuition.
