There are those days when you feel uninspired, every brushstroke seems difficult, and the blank page stares back at you disdainfully. Don't worry, even the best artists have phases like this. The secret, however, is to remain creative and continuously improve your skills.

In episode #11 of artist Kelly Anne Powers Learn to Paint podcast, Mark Eanes a guest and revealed 11 effective exercises to help you hone your artistic skills – even on seemingly lost days.

Most of these exercises were standalone projects that could be perfectly combined with music, an audiobook, or a podcast episode. His suggestions couldn't be more fitting. If painting seems overwhelming right now, that's perfectly fine.

Take some time out for yourself. Perhaps now is the ideal moment to try something smaller and more concrete. The exercises listed below will allow you to quickly and easily develop your skills in a relaxed way.

01 Blind drawing and stimulating the brain

Take five to ten minutes to draw without looking. This exercise not only helps improve your hand-eye coordination but also activates other areas of the brain that are not usually used as much when drawing. This will boost your intuition and memory.

02 Master the basics

If you want to draw or paint precisely, it is essential to understand the six aforementioned fundamentals of art. These include composition , color theory , light, shadow, perspective, anatomy, and form . These elements form the foundation of art and will help you to depict reality and acquire the necessary knowledge.

Once you master these fundamentals, you'll notice a significant improvement in your work. It's not surprising that this can be time-consuming, but it will greatly benefit your skills.

03 Time-controlled painting

One method Jane Davies (episode 3) uses when painting is to set challenges such as timed painting. Aim to draw strokes and apply paint within a set timeframe of about 30 minutes. The goal isn't to create a finished work of art that you like.

Rather, the goal is simply to keep working continuously. Overcome the resistance and just keep painting. Why this is fantastic: We often place a strong focus on the final picture. Do we like it? Will others like it? This exercise helps us shift our focus to the process itself. How do you react to what you create? Where will it lead you next?

04 Color studies with a limited palette

Work with a limited color palette, for example, only three primary colors and white. This forces you to think intensively about color mixing, and you will learn to better understand the complex relationships between colors.

The challenge here is to create harmony while preserving diversity.

05 Speed Drawing

Set a time limit for your sketches – about one to five minutes per subject. This technique helps you to quickly capture the essential shapes and proportions and improves your ability to focus on the essentials.

It also improves your speed and decisiveness.

06 Drawing backwards: A journey through time

Another interesting exercise is drawing backwards. Start by drawing your subject from the details down to the basic shapes, and then reverse the process.

This will strengthen your understanding of the structure and layers of an image, which is essential for more complex work.

07 Study of the Masters

Another effective way to foster your artistic talent is to learn from the work of other artists. To this end, you can explore art events like Art Basel or Art Cologne and attend various exhibitions. There, you'll have the opportunity to analyze new approaches and styles to find inspiration for your own artwork.

It is therefore advisable to examine your own work closely, as this will help you better understand the creative process. In this way, you will become familiar with new techniques and ideas that can elevate your skills and your artwork to a higher level.

Studying the works of famous artists can also be very instructive. Copy a work by an old or modern master. Through this engagement, you will recognize how they used composition, light and shadow, color, and brushstrokes. This offers you fresh perspectives and brilliant techniques for your own work.

08 Photo Studies

Photograph interesting scenes or objects and use these photos as a reference to draw or paint them.

This practice gives you the opportunity to improve your observation skills and develop an understanding of how to transfer image compositions from photographs to your own art.

09 Precise observation / Training the eye

It's easy to fall into the trap of drawing how you think an object looks, rather than depicting what's actually in front of you. To improve accuracy, every artist must learn to separate their drawings from preconceived notions about what they're depicting. With time and increasing practice, you'll develop a better understanding of how objects and shapes behave, and the process of tracing will become increasingly intuitive.

Before you gain this confidence, there's a tried-and-tested exercise for training your eyes : draw from an reference image . This method forces you to draw what you actually see, instead of relying on your own assumptions.

10. Combining Media: Mixed Media Experiments

Don't be afraid to combine different media. Start by drawing with a pencil, then add layers of watercolors, ink, or pastels.

Mixed media brings a fresh dynamic to your work and allows you to explore different textural and visual effects.

11. Practice mixing colors

If you're feeling uninspired, challenging yourself to combine specific colors is an excellent idea. Annie O'Brien Gonzales (episode 1 of the Learn to Paint podcast) recommends taking color code

Why this is great: This exercise really focuses you on a personal challenge. It's very fulfilling when you hit the exact color. And even if you don't, you'll learn a lot about mixing colors in a risk-free way.

12. Create a framework using color schemes

Annie O'Brien Gonzales (Episode 1) discusses three different color schemes (monochromatic, analogous, and complementary) in her interview. Take a reference image and challenge yourself to paint it three times individually, each time using a different color scheme (or using a ballpoint pen or colored pencil).

Why this is so exciting: It's impressive how differently a painting can look depending on the color scheme used. Plus, it's fun to feel the urge to use colors outside the scheme. But hold back! Really try to stick to the chosen scheme. If you do, you'll discover what's possible.

13 Free doodling and brainstorming

Doodling sounds trivial, but it helps to free blocked thoughts. Filling a blank sheet of paper with random lines or patterns without pressure can be very relaxing and simultaneously provide you with new ideas. Don't give your inner critic a chance and explore your spontaneous creativity.

14 printing techniques: From linocut to monotype

Printmaking techniques like linocut or monotype are not only time-honored methods, but also incredibly fun. These techniques encourage you to actively shape the negative space and offer a completely new approach to your artistic creations. This exercise challenges your planning and craftsmanship.

15 Storytelling through your art

Use your sketches or small drawings to tell a short story. This can be as simple as a sequence of three pictures or a more complex narrative.

Practicing storytelling through art helps you to think more deeply about the meaning and message of your works and develops your narrative focus.

16 Meditative Art Exercises: Zentangle

Zentangle is a method of meditative drawing in which repeating patterns are drawn on small surfaces. This practice not only has a calming effect but also improves your precision and concentration.

It's a wonderful way to let your creativity flow intuitively.
