About the artist Gustav Klimt
Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was a renowned Austrian painter of symbolism and a leading personality of the Vienna Secession, a Art Nouveau movement. Born in poverty, he completed an apprenticeship at the Vienna School of Art for Art and Industry. At first controversial because of his erotic art, rebelled climate with the founding of the Vienna Secession.
Finally he gained recognition and became a professor in Munich and Vienna. Klimt's characteristic style was characterized by symbolism, eroticism and exquisite decorativity, with the focus on women and a deep sense of colors. He was inspired by Jan Toorop and influenced artists like Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. His works, including "the kiss" and "The Tree of Life" , demonstrated his championship in handling gold and are still highly praised.
