NHM Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014 – 50 years of award-winning wildlife photography
The international nature and wildlife photography competition celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014. The winners were officially announced on October 21, 2014. The winning entries were exhibited in London from October 24, 2014, to August 30, 2015.
The prestigious photography competition is owned by the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine and sponsored by Veolia Environnement. It is an international leader in the artistic representation of nature , and the award is highly coveted by photographers from all over the world. No wonder, as it represents a selection of breathtaking and incredibly detailed nature documentation of the highest caliber.
This year, American Michael Nichols impressed the jury and took first place with a black and white photograph of resting lionesses with their cubs in Serengeti National Park. He prevailed against competitors from 96 countries, who submitted a total of 42,000 photos to the competition.
A nice and welcome side effect of this competition is that the photographers repeatedly draw attention to endangered animal species, controversial topics concerning flora and fauna, and injustices.
